Hey You Tall People
May 20, 2000 is the day I met Youngstown. They were performing a free concert at the Mall of America. This is the story of what happened that day, starting at the beginning. After getting ready, I watched my tape of the Youngstown & STEPS in concert. My mom was watching the news, and she said Youngstown was going to be live in the studio. So, we waited for them to be on before we left.
On the news, they sang something A Cappela. They sound so much like *NSYNC! They were talking about the mall concert (DC adding they were gonna get lost in it). Dallas took out a one-use camera, and was telling everyone about the Kodak picture contest. As he put in away, Dallas took a picture of the viewers watching (meaning he took a picture of the video camera). Around 11:00 (The show started at noon, by the way) my family left to the mall. When we got to the location of the concert, we got in line, and the security person put a wristband on me that gets you on stage to meet Youngstown after the show.
After standing in line for awhile, Jon London from KDWB came on stage. They were throwing stuff out into the audience. My dad caught a KDWB T-shirt. It says KDWB on the front, and WASSUP?! on the back. They were asking Y-Town trivia. If they pick you, and you answer correctly, you get a card that lets you get your picture taken with the guys. I wasnt picked. Some of the questions were: What does DC stand for? Whos the youngest member? And, Which one of their songs was featured in Inspector Gadget?
After that, Jon London talked to people in the audience. He was talking to me cause I was the Tall Person. I was taller than a lot of the other people in the audience. He said that Youngstown was coming out in a couple minutes. Some people in the audience started to chant, We want Youngstown! After a few minutes, Jon came back out and said there was some technical problem, so Jon talked a little more. He decided to bring up what happen when *NSYNC was there. If you dont know what happened, here it is. *NSYNC was at the Mall of America for an autograph singing thing. But, it was cut short when someone threw a water balloon at them. Then Jon got off the stage again.
I saw a bunch of security people and Youngstown running towards the stage! Everyone started to scream as they ran up on stage. They opened the show by dancing to a song by Ozzy Osborne. I think the song was called Crazy Train. It was so loud it made the ground shake. The beat pounded in your stomach. The first song Youngstown sang was Dont Worry (Dance Floor). They yelled, When we say Youngs, you say Town!. Kinda like when *NSYNC does the When we say *N, you say SYNC! thing. When the song was over, Y-Town talked a little, the started up The Prince You Charmed. The dancing was a little different than on In Concert, because they werent using mic stands.
After that was over, they were talking again. DC was so out of breath, he had to gasp for air every couple of seconds. The next song was Through Your Eyes, the name of the tour. During the song, Dallas took out the one-use camera again, and took pictures of the audience. Next song was Its not what you think from the Famous Jett Jackson. Lee Thompson Youngs rap was pre record, and the guys did a dancebreak to it. I spotted DC mouthing the words to the rap. After that, they sang Ill be your Everything. I knew some of the choreography to it.
Now the last song, it was Pedal to the Steel. I think KDWB should be playing this song on the air, but they dont. They sang the remix version, not the CD version. I knew some of the choreography to this one, too. When the song was finished, Youngstown left to get ready for the meet n greet. Some workers set up chairs on the stage.
Around 1 pm, or so, Youngstown came back on. First, the contest winners went up to get their pictures taken with Youngstown. After that was over with, They sat and waited for the workers to set up a table. DC was using a clipboard to play Hide n Seek with the audience. They went off stage while the workers brought up the table. DC didnt use the stairs, he just jumped off. After the table was on, Youngstown came back on to start the meet n greet. I was pretty far back so it was gonna take awhile to get to the front.
So, Im finally to the front, waiting for the security guy to wave me up. I'm surprised I wasn't very nervous or anything. I go up and get to the table and Dallas was first. He was like, Hi, how are you? Nice superman shirt. I now have six superman shirts, mostly because of that comment. After signing the CD cover thingy, Dallas blew on it to let the marker dry. Then he said something I didnt understand; I think something about why he blew on it. Next was DC. He didnt say much, not much more than hi. The one thing I remembered was that he was chewing gum. Last but not least was Sammy. He was kinda like DC, minus the gum-chewing thing. While I was up there some girls at the railing on the second floor screamed, We love you, Sammy.
I get my CD cover thing (whats the technical name for that thing?), and go of stage. Click on the pictures link to see the concert pix. My sister, who came up with me, had my camera. But didnt take any photos, so no up close photos.
