Yay For Silly String!
I met OTOWN on October 9, 2001 at the Mall of America. They were there for Cheerios 60th birthday anniversary. I got to the mall around 10:30am- the concert wasnt to start until after 5:00pm. About ten minutes after I got there they handed out wristbands that guaranteed you an autograph. Only the first 300 people got a band, and I was number 195. I actually was the 95th person in line, because the first 100 wristbands were for KDWB contest winners. I spent the next 6 hours sitting on the hard mall floor listening to the CDs I brought. Nothing like listening to Linkin Park while waiting to meet OTOWN. Eventually around 4:30pm they let the people waiting go into the Rotunda where the concert was going to be held. I was very happy with my spot- about 5th or 6th row.
Dave Ryan from KDWB came out in an attempt to entertain us until OTOWN arrives. A little after 5 oclock people on the upper floors started screaming. They could see OTOWN coming. The next five minutes were interesting. I could see Trevor, Ashley and Jacob on one side of the stage trying to communicate with Dan and Erik who were on the other side. It was funny in a way; they were doing this sign language sort of thing back and forth. Finally around 5:20pm the show began with clips from the first season of "Making the Band." And then OTOWN took the stage, starting with a little dance intro number. I remembered parts of it from watching "Making the Band." The first song was Take Me Under. I really liked the dance during the faster part of the song. The dance sorta reminded me of the dance to Pop.
Next song was Liquid Dreams. Thats the one OTOWN song that I memorized the choreography to. So, I did the dance! Someone near the front sprayed silly string on Trevor. After a couple of times he was like, Okay, thats enough. After that they talked a little bit and introduced themselves. Ashley started talking about the next song before Jacob introduced himself. Jake was like, Dont forget me! OTOWN also mentioned how huge the Rotunda is, and pointed out the guy in the bee costume up on the 3rd floor. Next song was The Painter. OTOWN decided to bring up this little girl from the audience and sing to her. It was cute.
During Sexiest Woman Alive, which was the next song, someone knocked over a microphone stand. I didnt see who, but I saw Jacob picking it up. They used the mic stands during Girl the next song. Girl is one of my favorite OTOWN songs, because Jacob gets more solos in it than usual. Love Should Be A Crime is another favorite for the same reason. They didnt do that one though. After Girl was another talking break. They made an official announcement about how there is going to be a 3rd season of Making the Band now on MTV.
The next song was We Fit Together. They started it on the stools, then got up to do the choreography. It was my favorite, performance wise. At the beginning while on the stools Jacob was doing this head-bob thing that was kinda funny/cute. In the dance I really enjoyed this walk move across the stage. Last of their songs was All or Nothing. During his solo Jacob did the microphone flip-and-catch thing just like in the music video. Before getting off the stage OTOWN had everyone sing happy birthday to Cheerios. And then was the balloon drop, which created the funniest moment of the day. Trevor jumped all around the stage to stomp on as many balloons as he could. And then he fell over- Im pretty sure on purpose. So they left to get ready for the autograph signing.
Dave Ryan came back out to give stuff away. OTOWN left their sweat towels and half-drunk water bottles on stage, so Dave gave those away. For the towels he gave them to the 5 loudest people. The person directly behind me was one who was chosen. OTOWN then came back for the signing. I had about an hour wait. I spent it watching the stage for a chance to get photos of the members with out people in the way. The signing had to be stopped twice because of people who were pushing and shoving. While waiting I saw that someone had given Ashley their Cheerios bee headband with the big antennae sticking up. Once I saw a chance to snap a pic, Ashley took it off.
Around 7:30 it was finally my turn to go onstage. While waiting on the steps, OTOWNs manager, and Rich from LFOs brother, came down them. Just thought Id share. 1st was Dan. I put my CD booklet on the table to be autographed. Dan stuck out his hand to shake hands and was like, Hi, how ya doing? So Dan signs and pushed the booklet to Ashley, who was totally spacing out. Kinda not paying attention, wiggling his sharpie back and forth in his fingers. Finally, he snaps out of it and says hi and also shakes hands. He signs the thing and next was Erik. He was all smiley and says hi, and we also shake.
And next was Jacob. He says hi, but doesnt stick out his hand to shake. I figured after an hour of meeting people and shaking hands I would be sick of it, so I didnt mind too much. My mom, who noticed during the performance that Jacob kinda looked and acted like one of her cousins, told Jacob that he looked like her cousin. He asked, Even the locks? I found that funny, because most people call dreadlocks dreads for short, not locks. And last was Trevor. We shake hands and he says, Hi, Im Trevor. I thought, but did not say, Hi, I already know that. So I had my booklet all signed, and walked off the stage. And thats one more band crossed off the must-meet list. Just *NSYNC to go, even thought I really dont think that will happen. I guess Ill just have to wait and see.
