Justin Lost His Touch!
The Pop Odyssey tour, Minnesota concert. We got there early enough that while waiting for the doors to open I could hear the sound check. It was very faint, but I heard something. Once inside, music videos were playing on the jumbotrons. When a Britney Spears video started to play, people actually started to boo! I also saw the *NSYNC Whats your Anti-drug? was shown several times. And it didnt get old, funny every time. And they showed previews of Lance and Joeys movie On the Line. Joeys characters funny.
Around 7:30 Steve Fatone (Joeys brother) came out to introduce the opening acts, and throw stuff out into the audience. Frankie, the Toy room guy, came out with a gun-type thingy to shoot FuMan Skeeto shirts to the audience way in back. I was on the floor, section A-5, row 27, seat 14 in case you want to know. Our opening acts were supposed to be Edens Crush and BBMak, but something happened and BBMak wasnt there. So instead we got Tonya Mitchell, Meredith Edwards, and Edens Crush. I dont really like girl singers, so none of the opening acts really interested me.
The opening acts were finished around 8:30. There was a half hour intermission. Something interesting was the lower level was trying to get a wave to go through the entire stadium. It started out going just a few feet, but once it finally made it all the way around everyone was on their feet cheering. As you may or may not know, *NSYNC first comes out at the stage in the middle. So you need to get them out there without being seen. Theyre rolled out hidden in these big black boxes. Two of them went right past me, not even 20 feet away. That was cool.
At about 9:00, the lights dimmed and the show began. It started with a pretaped skit- several of those came up throughout the concert. On the skit Joey came out dressed like a geeky looking teacher. He wrote Pop on the chalk bored. Then clips were shown as we went through the history of *NSYNC. Some of the older pictures sure made me laugh. Back to Joey, and he writes Dirty in front of pop. The screen changed to *NSYNC dressed looking like punks. Five guys in Monk costumes came on the main stage, the decoys. The monk people went through trapdoors on the stage. Out on the middle stage you see this huge glittering pyramid. It opens, and *NSYNC is revealed! And of course the crowd goes crazy.
*NSYNC started with Pop starting up on the middle stage and working their way down to the main stage by the end. From my spot it was kinda hard to see them on the ramp, so a lot of the pictures I took were of the jumbotrons. Next was a medley of Tearin up my Heart, I Want You Back, and God Must Have Spent. TUMH was the 99 VMA version. And during GMHSALMTOY, they rose up on pedestals on the right side of the stage. I, of course, was on the left side. Once that was over, *NSYNC went through the curtains for a costume change.
The big jumbotron in the center began to split apart. The middle part came down to form a ramp. *NSYNC then reappeared up at the top of the ramp. Next song was a new one, called Just The Two Of Us. They came down the ramp in an elevator type thing. I knew a lot of this song and dance because they had showed part of in on the local news when the tour first started. Once it was over, *NSYNC loaded back on the elevator thing and went back up. And the jumbotron folded back together.
Next comes the second skit. It was Lance and Chris on horses, talking with southern accents. Lance told Chris to call him Jackson. So Chris goes, Hi Jackson! Lance said to do it again. This time the whole crowd also yelled, Hi Jackson! The skit was weird, but in a funny way. It had *NSYNC dressed like cowboys, in different places. My fave was in front of McDonalds.
*NSYNC then reappears up on top of the stage on harnesses! They started Space Cowboy as they flew down to the middle stage. They spent sometime out there before going back to the main stage, where 5 big mechanical bulls were waiting. So, they get up on the bulls and ride them. I dont know why, but that whole thing was hilarious. *NSYNC did some of the choreography still on the bulls, too.
And now for one of my favorite parts of the whole concert. After the song is over everyone leaves the stage except Chris. He started going down the Ramp, and told everyone to yell, Yeehaw! We all do and he says, Wow! Pretty good for a bunch of Northerners. Chris then takes a pink feather boa from someone in the audience. This stripe tease music starts up, and he starts to dance with the boa! It was so funny! He gets all tangled up and trips, falling to the ground. The music stops, and he gets up, the boa all tangled up on him. Everyone starts laughing, and he yells with fake hurt, Its not funny!
So that whole thing is over, and *NSYNC all are back on the main stage, where a bunch of candles were set up. They then sing the Grammy awards version of This I Promise You. I really like the a cappella part. After that was another skit thing. This time it was a black and white silent film. In it Justin tries to give a girl a flower. She ignores him, and Justin gets all sad and walks away. The over dramatic facial expressions were so funny. Justin sits on a step, where the other guys try to cheer him up. They pretend to be the three stooges and stuff like that.
Next song was a new one called Gone. Im not really into slow songs, but this one is good. The ended was funny. Justin was on the ramp, down on his knees, totally into the song when Chris comes up from behind and hits Justin in the head with what appeared to be a giant inflatable hammer. He was like, Snap out of it. Look at all the toys! Then 5 girl backup dancers brought out a ton of different toys. There were scooters, bikes, stuffed animals, and even supersoakers.
All these toys were used for the next song, Its Gonna Be Me. I kinda missed part of this because of my camera. I looked down to check how many pictures I had left before changing film, when I noticed the low battery light was on. It still let me take photos, but I didnt know if they would turn out or not. They luckily turned out. Anyway, *NSYNC bounced on these big rubber balls, to the beat of the song. About halfway through, it changed to the 2000 VMA version. That was cool.
After that, the audience was split down the middle for a Whos louder competition. I was on JC and Lances side. Our little chant was You know we came to rock, or something like that. The other side had, Gimmie some of that dirty pop, with Chris and Joey. Justin then picked the winner. It was my side- yea!
Next was a bunch of new songs. First one I think was called See Right Through. It has a very catchy chorus. *NSYNC used conveyor belt for the song. I really liked the song. After that were the band introductions. Lance and Joey did the intros. We made sure to make the most noise for Ruben- cuz hes cool. Each band member got to play a little for like 30 seconds. Ruben played the guitar riff for Walk This Way. During one guy, cant remember who, Joey started doing this really goofy looking dance.
Next song was Up Against the Wall. During this they used Velcro walls. *NSYNC would jump on a trampoline into the wall, and then they would stick. I was watching Lance jump onto the wall, and he didnt stick! That was funny. The song is really awesome. Next was another skit. JC was on the phone with his girlfriend. The other line rings, and he answers it. Its Joey saying, What up dork? JC hangs up, and it rings again. Its Lance, combing his hair, and he says, What are YOU doing. Like the TV commercials. JC hangs up again, and it rings again. This time it was Chris testing the three-way calling with Justin, who was in a boat.
Next song was Celebrity. It had a red carpet setup, with contest winners on stage as the paparazzi. By the end of the song *NSYNC was back up on the middle stage. The next three songs were all slow. I didnt catch the name of the first one, I think I was changing film. The second was Fallen. I liked it, Chris had a solo! Last was a song called Selfish. During that song *NSYNC spread out on all of the stage, Chris still up on the middle.
From those spots, they started No Strings Attached. It was interesting with them so spread out and doing the same dance routine. There was the one part where Justin does a pointing thing, and a bunch of fireworks explode from where he pointed. He does that, and nothing happens. The song stops as he tries again, and again, and again. The others were like, Justin lost his touch! Then Justin did this thing like electricity was building, and he pointed to both sides of the stage, and fireworks came out from all across the stage. He blows on his fingers like they were smoking guns. The song finished, and *NSYNC leaves the stage.
A guy was on the middle stage, doing something. It made no sense. But there was a really cool laser show. Then on the jumbotrons a *NSYNC video game thing came on. Thats when I figured out the guy was supposed to be controlling *NSYNC in a video game. Joey and JC started the song Game Over by themselves. Then Chris, Lance, and Justin came flying out from underneath the stage. The song was cool! At the end there was a thing where they tried to beat the controller. They did, and on the screen flashed Game Over.
The last song was Bye, Bye, Bye. Nothing special, Ive seen it performed like a million times on TV. Almost the entire audience was doing the dance. I was waiting for someone to hit the person next to them in the head while doing the wave thing. *NSYNC exit was very cool. Five wicker basket thingys were rolled up on stage. They went in, and like a magic trick, they disappeared. It was amazing, the whole show was.
