Chicago Band Rawk
Got there a little after 7:30, so the first band was already on stage. Escape From Earth, a band from Chicago who also happened to perform at Sonshine Festival Thursday night. They have a song in 6/8 time, which always makes me happy. I was slightly distracted from their performance as three fourths of Gaskit were sitting at the table in front of me watching. Most crowd was 18 and under, so a few 20 somethings sitting around are kinda obvious looking.
The drummer did stick flips and other various tricks. Oh, and during the song in 6/8 time a bunch of kids up front started fake ballroom dancing. The other half was moshing. Just take a moment to visualize that one. They asked if anyone knew who Bon Jovi was, but yet no cover song came about. After their performance the singer was running around trying to get people to buy their CD, so I bought one. I got a few stickers for free because I'm cool like that. :P
Next was a local band ABEC. Eh, okay if you like that thing. I'm just not very fond of speed drumming. A few moshing kids got dangerously close to slamming into the merch booths.
And now for Gaskit. For the first few songs I stuck to my table using zoom, but the photos were turning out too dark from the distance. Zoomed completely out I have the same image as being right up front with no zoom. So I went up front instead. I felt tall. Since when were high school kids so short? Okay, not all were high schoolers. This one little kid barely looked old enough for middle school.
It was obvious that most everyone came for Gaskit. The other bands had maybe 20 people get up front by the end of their set. Gaskit had that many up there while still setting up and sound checking. And when asked who was at the Rosemount show the entire crowd erupted. They had written a new song (evidentially in the van during the drive up) that was inspired by the benefit show. It was titled "Two To One." The tune sorta kinda reminded me of Linkin Park. A lot of their actions reminded me of Linkin Park. Especially with the crate to stand upon. Freddie (lead singer) did the swaying back and forth thing while kneeling on the crate Mike Shinoda style.
Oh, and I was not the only one with a camera as I though I would. I saw at least four others. Of course I was the only one with a big SLR thing around the neck. I must have been really noticeable with the big camera, being several inches taller than everyone around, and wearing bright red. Seriously, all in the building was in black or a neutral color.
So yeah, they rocked. And they performed "Response Ability," which is my favorite. I was almost attacked by a drumstick. I didn't realize one was tossed until it flew inches past my face. None were tossed after the set as the screen came down before there was a chance of it happening. I wanted to stick around and say "hey," but my ride wanted to go right then and there.
