Dear Colleague,
please receive enclosed herewith the congress presentation and update to the first announcement.
Sustainable development as well as man and environment protection are the two key elements underlying a modern society that intends to progress in full respect of human beings, their fundamental rights and their own survival.
The forthcoming congress being held in Bari in 1999 provides an opportunity to reflect on these fundamental issues. Several Euro-Mediterranean experts will be meeting to discuss these issues with a view to continuing together along the path of sustainable development. Not ignoring the undoubted progress achieved by science and technology, indeed, it intends to reconcile both the technological and humanistic sides which are involved in all human productive activities.
The presence of the Community of Mediterranean Universities - an institution supported by UNESCO for the Mediterranean programme and gathering more than 160 Universities from all the Mediterranean Countries - intends to serve as liaison among all these Countries. They are genuinely committed to a progressive cultural growth which aims to be respectful of all people's rights and needs, and are interested in building co-operation relations and knowledge exchanges, with the sole aim of progressive mutual growth.
The Italian Association of Industrial Hygienists (AIDII), which numbers 1,500 members, has established a longstanding and fruitful tradition in the field of risk factor evaluation and prevention in the working environment within the European and Mediterranean framework. AIDII aims at developing and maintaining a safe working environment that can guarantee each worker's physical safety; promoting the industrial hygiene profession in industries, public organisations and communities; representing a reference point to promote the exchange of ideas and experiences. One of the activities in line with AIDII's objectives is the organisation of an annual conference that in the year 1999 will acquire the status of the "European Congress of Mediterranean Countries".
The Congress objectives are: to assess the state of the art with reference to the most important and topical issues of industrial hygiene; to discuss their implications for the "practical" profession of the industrial hygienist in European and Mediterranean countries; to promote the information exchange in the field of industrial hygiene both among Associations and individuals working in the field; to define international workgroups on specifically European and/or Mediterranean issues; to provide qualified and comparable support in the countries concerned; to standardise the "quality" of the services supplied in compliance with a common professional code of conduct.
Following please find the update of the first congress announcement containing some further details about the issues to be debated. We would like to draw your attention not only to the issues description, but also to the new deadline by which scientific contributions should be sent.
