MINUTES
OF THE COMMITTEE FOR THE 1st CORATO INTERNATIONAL PRIZE
“NUTRITION WITHIN THE MEDITERRANEAN”
On the 17th and 18th of October, 2001, in the city of Corato, Italy, the Committee for awarding the 1st Corato International Prize ”Nutrition within the Mediterranean”, composed by:

Mr. Rossano MONTARULI, Adviser for cultural affairs to the Mayor
Prof. Luigi AMBROSI, President of the Community of Mediterranean Universities, NGO
Prof. Dilek BOYACIOGLU, Head of Department of Food Engineering, Istanbul Technical University, Turkey
Prof. Antonio CAPURSO, Head of Cattedra di Geriatria, Facoltà di Medicina, Università di Bari, Italy
Prof. Abderrahim Dalal, Professor of Physiology, University Cadi Ayyad Marrakech, Morocco
Prof. Carlo DI BENEDETTA, Coordinator of CMU’s Head Office, Bari, Italy
Dott. Cosimo LACIRIGNOLA, Director of the International Center for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), Valenzano-Bari
convened at the “Appia Antica” Hotel in order to evaluate the scientific contributions of the following applicants:

The Committee, on the basis of the Call for Bids bylaws, decides to exclude from further consideration the candidates INNOCENTE Isabella and CENTRO INTERDISCIPLINARE DI BIOLOGIA (as it is identified), since their applications have been received after the deadline was expired.
The Committee establishes the following criteria for the evaluation:
a) each paper published on international journals with editorial board is rated up to a maximum of 10 (ten) points depending on its relevance for the topic of the prize;
b) each paper published on international books or proceedings and highly related to the topic is granted up to 6 (six) points;
c) each paper published in a journal with no editorial board and highly related to the topic is granted up to 2 (two) points;
d) for the scientific career is granted up to 3 (three) points provided that it is related, even by and large, to the nutrition teaching as well as research.
The Committee, thereafter, provides to open the packets of the presented documents and to calculate the value of the scientific contribution for each candidate applying the above mentioned criteria.
After the analysis of the scientific work and the curriculum of each applicant the Committee considers worth mentioning all the candidates for their scientific contributions to the field of nutrition within Mediterranean, even though Proff. Antonia POLYCHRONOPOULOU – TRICHOPOULOU and Flaminio FIDANZA are considered to be recognised for their outstanding scientific research in understanding the peculiarities of the impact of Mediterranean diet on human health.
After deep and exhaustive discussion the Committee decides to award the 1st Corato International Prize ”Nutrition within the Mediterranean” to Prof. Antonia POLYCHRONOPOULOU – TRICHOPOULOU, since she has played a leading role in the study of the Mediterranean diet, which is characterised by high content in olive oil as well as cereals, fruits, vegetables and legumes, low in red meat, moderate in wine during meals and with dairy products consumed mainly in the forms of cheese and yoghurt.
Furthermore, the Committee considers the scientific contribution of Prof. Flaminio FIDANZA equally important in defining some cornerstones of the Mediterranean diet and its impact on cardiovascular disease prevention, in which field he spent his entire life.
