LCDR Ray McNeice



History

LCDR McNeice was born 1905 and graduated with the Annapolis class of 1927. After his required 2-year tour with the surface fleet, he volunteered for submarine service. Upon graduation from submarine school in 1930, he was assigned to the USS Nautilus (SS-168), where he served as Engineering Officer during her commissioning and shakedown. After several cruises and fleet exercises, McNeice was promoted to executive officer. In 1932 he transfered to Submarine School - New London, Connecticut. In 1935 he left the Navy to work for Electric Boat in New London. In 1940 he left New London for Manitowoc, Wisconsin. He helped setup the building of submarines ordered out of the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company in the emergency building program of 1940. In January 1942 he re-enlisted and was assigned to Submarine School Manitowoc. In August 1942, McNeice requested active duty after his cousin was killed on USS Quincy (CA-39) off of Guadalcanal on August 9. In September 1942 he was given command of USS Skipjack (SS-184), assigned to SUBRON 7 in Fremantle, Australia. McNeice and Skipjack were reassigned to SUBRON 4 in January 1943. In September 1943 LCDR McNeice was transfered to USS Bowfin (SS-287) in Fremantle.
