Greg Turner was born 1904 in Galax, Virginia. After graduating from Annapolis in 1931 he served aboard the battleship Nevada (BB-36) for 2 years. In July of 1933 he volunteered for submarine duty at New London. After his training, he served as communications officer on the S-22 based out of Pearl Harbor from August 1935 until January 1937. He was then made XO of the Narwhal (SS-167) and served in this capacity until the outbreak of the war. At that time he was ordered back to New London to become an instructor. In September 1942 he was assigned command of the USS Tarpon (SS-175) based out of Pearl. He retained this command until being sunk by a battleship escort. He was rescued and given a 30-day leave after which he was assigned command of the USS Muskellunge (SS-262), which he now commands.
