CDR Duke Cummings



History

Duke Cummings was born 1902 in Queens, New York. Upon graduating Annapolis in 1929, he served as a junior officer aboard the USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) for 3 years. In September of 1932 he volunteered for Submarine School at New London, where he later became an instructor until the War broke out. Volunteering for active duty he was given command of the USS Tautog (SS-199) in February 1943. After losing the Tautog in what was recorded as a gallant effort, he was then given command of the USS Drum (SS-228) until he was relieved for a new command assignment. Commander Cummings is presently in command of the USS Skate (SS-305) and is the CO of SubRon 4.

Awards

CDR Cummings has been awarded the Navy Cross and two Silver Stars.
