Patrol Narrative:
Began Patrol 1600 10 Apr 1943. Convoy spotted 1620 Apr 10. 52-30N, 172-45E.
Changed course to intercept. Adjusted to course 357 toparallell MR’s, 1/3. targets 300 yds to starboard. When we are in
middle of convoy fired tubes 1-4 and 7-10.
Dived to 300ft to reload tubes and hide from
DD’s. Sonar reports Small freighter and
Ol tanker sunk. Rose to periscope depth
and spotted crippled Converted Factory Ship.
Fired 5 & 6. Dove to 300 ft.
all stop. DD’s circled and endured DC barrage sustaining damage to include
periscope. With damage could not stay
submerged much longer rose to 33ft. to defend against DD’s. fired tubes 1 &
4 but missed. Used deck gun while retreating at full speed. DD did not fire back. DD sustained damage fired tube 7 & 8 and
sunk Kagero. Surfaced conducted repairs
and returned to port. Awarded Bronze
Star. Hull Damage 55% System Damage
23%. 17 days repair time in port. 8
