TO: Submarine Division Commanders, SubPacFlt

FROM: ComSubPac

DATE: June, 1942

SUBJECT: Mission Orders ( September 2003, Cycle 3 )

RMKS: 1 Tokyo has been bombed! Although the numbers of American planes involved was too low to achieve a major impact on the Japanese warmaking ability, it demonstrates that even the Emperor himself is not safe and that we will carry the fight to his doorstep.

RMKS: 2 The battle of the Coral Sea was a victory to our forces although achieved at a significant cost. For the first time the enemy has been forced to turn back and abandon his goal. The Japanese conquest of eastern New Guinea was successfully thwarted and the Hawaiian - Australia shipping lifeline preserved.

RMKS: 3 HYPO has intercepted large numbers of messages regarding the possible invasion of Midway Island or the Hawaiian Islands, with a possible diversionary force most likely striking the Aleutian Islands. The Japanese cone has designated the unknown primary objective as ‘AF’. All boats patrolling Empire waters are to keep a sharp watch for possible IJN invasion forces. It is believed that the Japanese striking force will be composed of two carrier divisions. Division one composed of Akagi & Kaga and division two composed of Soryu & Hiryu. All veterans of the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor.

RMKS: 4 Unofficial tests are being conducted by Rear Admiral Lockwood, commander of Task Force 51, about the problems with the MK 14 torpedo. Here is part of a memo sent to BuOrd about the findings:

" Captain Fife and Commander (Lt.) Don Black in the U.S.S. Skipjack have conducted testing of the MK 14 torpedo in Frenchman’s Bay, Australia. Results show that the torpedoes actually ran an average of 11 feet deeper than depth setting. Skippers are instructed to subtract 11 feet from their MK 14 depth calculations so that the torpedoes will actually now run 5 feet under the keel of the target. Thus torpedo depth setting should be draft minus 6 feet."

Rear Admiral Charles Lockwood

Using the shallower settings, the MK IV exploder will now function according to design.

RMKS: 5 Photo Recon and LifeGuard missions in Your assigned AO are permissible but ALL P /R and L/ G missions outside your AO are NOT PERMITTED. They are to be disregarded

RMKS: 6 Due their limited range and low fuel carrying ability all S-Class boats are going to be assigned to Task Force 42, ALL Division Commanders are to assign any S-class boat in their division to the appropriate patrol zone.
