 Patrol Narrative:

RMKS/ 1. Departed Pearl Harbor 2nd of August 1942 and headed for the Java Sea. Had a load of Mk-14 torpedo’s with magnetic exploders.

RMKS/ 2. August 8th 06:22 entered my patrol sector by the Lombok Strait.

RMKS/ 3. 09:25 picked up two air contacts with our new SD radar at 17,440 yds. I took the Gar to radar depth to observe them and at 09:33 they disappeared off the radar screen. I prepared to surface at 10:28 and while checking the area with the periscope spotted a small convoy bearing 274` at 8,500 yds. I secured from surfacing and headed south at flank speed. A closer check showed 2-Troop ship and 2-Small Freighters being escorted by 1-Mutsuki and 1-Asashio Destroyer. At 6,000 yds I went to periscope depth and reduced speed to full. Commenced firing torpedo’s at 11:04 at the 2 Troop ships. Torpedo depth was set to 13 feet and all ran under the target without detonating. I then ordered the next spread to be set for 10 feet deep. 11:06 fired 2nd torpedo at lead Troop ship from 2,200 yds then headed deep. The escorts must have spotted the wakes because here they came. I changed course and headed north and evaded with ease. Came to periscope depth at 11:55 and spotted a Small Freighter astern heading 090`. I secured to and waited. At 11:56 I fired 1 torpedo set at 7 feet from 770 yds. Sound reported hearing it hit the target but it failed to detonate. Immediately fired a 2nd torpedo from 900 yds and was elated to see it impact and explode. The SF was finished due to a broken keel and sank. I dove to 300 feet and headed east to search for the other ships.

RMKS/ 4. At  12:32 the two escorts were picked up on sonar and to our disbelief they pinged us almost at once. After a few minutes of searching one of the DD’s roared overhead and released a pattern of depth charges. The boat rocked violently as they exploded very close by. Damage reports were reported as the Control Room hull had moderate leaking and Engine 2 was temporarily knocked out. 12:40 another close depth charge started flooding in the Conning tower and the Forward battery compartment. At 12:46 we took even more damage when a depth charge ruptured the Officers Quarters and the Fuel tanks. With the fuel leak pointing us out from above evading was going to difficult until dark. 13:01 the damage control officer reported the pumps were falling behind on the flooding and that Chlorine gas was detected in the flooding battery compartment. I had delayed the inevitable as long as possible and at 13:07 I passed the word to proceed to periscope depth to engage the Destroyers.

RMKS/ 5. 13:14 fired 2 torpedo’s at the Asashio DD from 1,700 yds, one hit and detonated but failed to sink the warship. The second was a dud. I fired my last two loaded stern torpedo’s at the Mutsuki from 2,800 yds and passed the word to Battle Surface. Both torpedo’s missed the Mutsuki which sealed our fate. My gun crew was firing as rapidly as possible and getting hits but between the two Destroyers we began to take a beating. All the Aft Torpedo tubes were knocked out, the Forward Torpedo room hull was breached and at 13:21 the Deck Gun took a direct hit killing the entire gun crew and disabling the gun. With no weapons left but the Forward torpedo’s  I gave the word to come about due to our inability to outrun the DD. Just as we began to turn the periscope was knocked out and we began to dive due to the flooding. With the extensive damage and no hope of evading the DD I passed the word to abandon ship. The DD proceeded to pick up survivors thus ending our war.
