Patrol Narrative:

RMKS/ 1. We departed port on 4 January 1944 for the Philippine Sea and arrived January 12 1944 at 06:13. Had a full load of electric torpedo’s on board. Weather was Overcast with Moderate seas.

RMKS/ 2. 23:01 radar made contact bearing 025` at 29,200 yds. 23:53 dove to radar depth and two minutes later spotted 1-Kagero DD. Went to periscope depth after spotting a 2nd DD and a Merchant. 00:23 identified 1-Small Freighter, 2-Standard Merchants, and 1-Troop ship and 1-Armed Merchant. 00:27 fired 2 torpedo’s at SM at 1,100 yds and fired 2 torpedo’s at TT at 1,000 yds. TT sank, fired a 3rd torpedo at the SM from 1,070 yds to further damage it. 00:30 fired a 4th torpedo from 1,100 yds to sink it. Went deep and got below a good thermal layer at 275 feet. Evaded the escorts with ease. 01:19 at radar depth and picked up main body at 17,000 yds bearing 280`. I surfaced to pursue and broke off at 02:32 as the convoy pulled away.

RMKS/ 3. Monday 13th January 07:29 radar contact bearing 188` at 33,000 yds. 09:06 spotted 1-Fubuki DD at 9,000 yds and went to periscope depth. 09:32 spotted 1-Tanker, 2-Supply ships bearing 319` at 4,500 yds. 09:39 fired 2 torpedo’s at OT from 3,000 yds then crash-dived. The escorts went active with sonar as soon as I fired. Got below thermal again and evaded to the east. Lost sonar contact at 10:20 and surfaced.

RMKS/ 4. 13:07 radar contact bearing 190` at 30,300 yds. Weather was Overcast with Heavy seas. 13:50 radar depth with contact dead ahead at 8,700 yds. 13:53 spotted 1-Takao CA and 1-Nagara CL and 1-Mutsuki DD. 14:03 the Task Force zigged right. 14:13 our periscope was spotted and fired upon. Fired 5 torpedo’s at CA from 800 yds then dove. Heard CL pass overhead. Dove to 363 feet and lost sonar contact at 14:58.

RMKS/ 5. Wednesday 15 January 1944 05:38 radar contact bearing 266` at 32,000 yds. Weather was Mostly Cloudy with Moderate seas. 06:49 spotted 3-Standard Merchants, 1-Troop ship and 1-Large Freighter bearing 020` at 9,000 yds and 3-Destroyers. Broke off contact as convoy pulled away. 11:13 radar contact bearing 270` at 29,000 yds. 12:15 spotted 1-Destroyer bearing 259` at 11,300 yds and dove to radar depth. 12:57 fired 2 torpedo’s at SM from 900 yds. Both hit and I fired a 3rd from 800 yds to sink it. Also fired 1 torpedo each at the two trailing ships (1-SM, 1-TT). One hit and one missed and I dove deep. Sonar reported 8 sets of high-speed screws overhead. 14:40 jettisoned debris and went to 402 feet. 15:19 lost sonar contact and arrived at radar depth at 15:51. Contact bearing 182` at 15,000 yds. I surfaced to search for the damaged ship. 16:34 spotted the burning Troop ship bearing 350` at 12,400 yds. 16:49 opened fire with deck gun from 4,000 yds. Fired 4 rounds for 3 hits and 1 miss to sink the ship. Went after single contact bearing 020` at 31,000 yds. 18:18 spotted a Large Freighter bearing 001`at 4,400 yds. Went to periscope depth and tried to close. Convoy was running at 16 kts and got by me. Surfaced after convoy cleared the area.

RMKS/ 9. 23:25 radar contact bearing 060` at 29,000 yds. Contact was pulling away and I secured.

RMKS/ 10. Friday 17 January 1944 01:08 radar contact bearing 345` at 31,000 yds. 03:39 spotted a SM and 2-AMC going away from us. Secured tracking.

I waited until the convoy was at point blank range to raise scope then fired 2 torpedo’s at 2 separate Oil Tankers from 900 yds. Crash-dove then worked at evading escorts. 11:30 jettisoned debris after receiving damage to the Aft Torpedo Room hull and the Periscope from depth charges. 11:59 damage control reported a fire in the Aft torpedo room. It was quickly extinguished and we managed to evade and surface. With the periscope being out I elected to return to port with 2 torpedo’s remaining aft.
