Patrol Narrative:
RMKS/ 1. Departed Pearl
Harbor 4th of February 1942 and headed for my assigned PZ.
RMKS/ 2. Arrived in the
Marianna’s Island chain 17 February 1942 near midnight and began to patrol. Had
24 Mk-14 torpedo’s equipped with the new Mk-6 Exploders.
RMKS/ 3. Wednesday 18
February 1942 11:29 lookouts spotted a large Merchant bearing 351` at 16,400
yds. I set an intercept course and closed. Further observations revealed 2-Std
Merchants, 1-Supply and 1-Troop ship and 1-Mutsuki DD. Dove to periscope depth
at 11:51 and setup on the 3 largest ships. 12:26 fired one torpedo each at the
2 SM’s and TT from 3,100 yds to 3,300 yds all set at 36-foot depth. Two of
these torpedo’s prematured seconds out of the tubes and the 3rd
missed when the target turned away. I turned away to evade any ASW efforts and
dove deep. At 12:40 came to periscope depth and spotted 3 of the 5 ships.
Escort and a SM were not seen. The spotted SM was heading northeast at high
speed and the Troop ship and Supply were heading west at about 7 knots. I went
after the Troop and at 14:08 fired tube # 10 from 900 yds set for 29 feet. It
passed under the Troop and I fired tube # 9 from 890 yds. It to passed under
the ship and it headed southeast. I battle surfaced and had the deck gunfire on
it. They fired 15 rounds for 15 hits from 1,200 yds and sank the Troop ship. I
headed west in search of the Supply but made no contact. I did however at 16:00
spot a large patrol of 2 Destroyers just south of Rota and I headed back east
at high speed.
RMKS/ 4. Thursday 19
February 1942 received a radio message ordering a Recon of Saipan Harbor before
the 21st. I headed for the port and at 06:54 I got the required
pictures and withdrew to deeper water. Only one ship and one aircraft were
spotted.
RMKS/ 5. Patrolled with no
sightings until the afternoon of the 23rd when I set course for
Pearl Harbor with barely enough fuel to get back. With the deep running
torpedo’s I felt lucky to even return. The crew was however in a high state of
moral due to the sinking of the Troop ship with the deck gun.
RMKS/ 6. 7 March 1942
Arrived Pearl Harbor.
