Patrol Narrative:   We departed on July 3, 1942 and headed for our assigned patrol area of the East China Sea. We arrived in our area on July 16, and headed for the western coast of Formosa. This area seems to be heavily traveled but the water is only about 200 feet deep so caution will have to be exercised.

July 17, 11:00 hours, we spotted a small convoy of a single merchant with six Destroyers and a spotter aircraft for escort. With only 180 feet of water depth and the heavy escort decided to let it pass.

July 18, 06:15 hours, spotted a small convoy with out an escort. Fired at two oil tankers sinking one and the second torpedo was a dud, fired a second at the tanker sinking it. Fired at a Standard Merchant two hits and a dud, surfaced and finished it off with the deckgun. Resuming our patrol.

July 18, 20:04 hours, spotted a lone Oil Tanker moving fast. Moved in on the surface and fired a single torpedo sinking the target. Resuming our patrol.

July 20, 09:18 hours, spotted a small convoy with a single escort. Fired sinking a Troop Transport, dove to avoid the escort. Depth charged with no damage to the boat, lost contact and resuming our patrol.

July 21, 06:05 hours, spotted a small convoy of two Standard Merchants without an escort. Fired two torpedoes at each, all hit causing damage. We surfaced and finished them both off with the deckgun. Resuming our patrol.

July 21, 21:32 hours, spotted a single unescorted merchant, moved in on the surface and fired two torpedoes. One hit and one dud, finished it off with the deckgun. Resuming our patrol.

July 22, 13:30 hours, spotted a small convoy with a single escort. Maneuvered to the far side of the convoy to place it between the escort and us. Fired at two Standard Merchants sinking one and damaging a second, two more duds. Fired another torpedo sinking the target. Dove and moved off at standard speed to avoid the escort. Lost contact with the escort and resumed our patrol.

July 23, 18:45 hours, spotted a medium convoy. Fired our last torpedo at the Oil Tanker sinking the target. Moved off and headed for home.

Torpedoes are still a problem with the duds.
