Patrol Narrative: We departed Midway on September 4, 1942 and arrived off the southern coast of Japan on September 13. We started a standard patrol between the Bungo Suido and Kii Suido looking for convoys transiting between the main islands.

September 14, 23:03 hours, we spotted an IJN Submarine but before we could get into a firing position the enemy sub dove and after trying to pick it back up we finally returned to out patrol without ever regaining contact.

September 15, 07:58 hours, we spotted a small-unescorted convoy of four ships. We fired the stern tubes at an AMC and a Large Freighter, two hits and one dud on the AMC and one hit on the LF sinking it. We fired three torpedoes from the forward tubes at a Standard Merchant, results two hits and one dud. Both the AMC and STD Merchant are on fire. Opened the range and surfaced, finished off both with the deckgun. Turned to pursue the last ship, a Small Freighter. Radar reports a SD radar contact so we broke off the chase and submerged to avoid the aircraft. Lost contact and resumed our patrol.

September 15, 19:48 hours, we spotted a CL Group, a single CL and two DD’s for escort. Set-up on the CL and fired sinking a Nagara Class CL. We dove deep to avoid the escorts and received a minor depth charging with no damage to the boat. Lost contact and resumed our patrol.

September 16, 20:10 hours, we spotted a small convoy of two Marus and a single escort. We fired three torpedoes at the Standard Merchant, all hits, sinking it. We dove deep to avoid the escort and it never picked us up. We moved off and after loosing contact we surfaced and resumed our patrol.

September 17, 07:22 hours, we spotted a small convoy of four Marus and a single escort. We picked up a SD radar contact but it moved off so we did an end-around and got in front of the convoy. We submerged and awaited its approach. We fired at a Troop Transport and a Standard Merchant, single hit on TT sinking it, three fired at the STD Maru, one hit, one premature, and one dud. We fired two more at the target, both hit sinking it. We dove deep to avoid the escort and were depth charged without any damage to the boat. We lost contact and resumed our patrol.

September 19, 12:37 hours, we spotted a small convoy coming right for our position. Only four torpedoes left, all in the stern tubes. We turned 180 degrees and set-up on a Standard Merchant. We fired at close range, with three hits and one dud, sinking the target. We dove deep to avoid the escort and lost contact without it ever picking up our position. We surfaced and headed for home with all torpedoes expended.
