Patrol Narrative: We left Pearl on April 3 and headed toward Northern Japan and arrived off the Japanese coast on April 13 where we started a standard war patrol.

On April 14, at about 23:00 hours, we spotted a small convoy that was unescorted. Moving in on the surface we set-up on a Standard Merchantman and fired three torpedoes at her set to run at 5 feet under the keel. ALL torpedoes missed under running the target without exploding. I believe the MK IV magnetic exploder is defective and we made an adjustment  to try and sink the ship. We moved ahead of the convoy again and fired again. This time two were hits and one a dud. Since the ship is unarmed we decided to finish it off with the deckgun. We set-up on a second Maru and fired three torpedoes and all hit and sunk the target. We resumed our patrol.

On April 15, at about 07:30 hours, we spotted a small convoy without escort. We fired a single torpedo at each of two Troop Transports. One hit sinking target and one dud. Fired a second torpedo at the TT and sunk the target. Fired three torpedoes at an AMC, two hits and one dud. Fired a single torpedo at a Large Freighter, dud fired a second at the LF and it hit causing heavy damage. We opened the range an than surfaced, we than attacked and sunk both targets with the deckgun. We resumed patrol.

On April 16, at about 04:19 hours we spotted three IJN submarines moving on the surface in front of us. We dove to avoid being spotted but the enemy must have also seen us as all three submerged. Last course of enemy subs was about 180 degrees due south so we turned to that course and went to full speed. 45 minutes later we surfaced and still heading south we went another 45 minutes before turning back to course 000. We submerged and awaited what we hoped would be the perfect ambush. At 06:00 hours we spotted an IJN submarine surfacing ahead of our position. We let he enemy come to us and after it passed us close aboard we fired a torpedo from the stern tubes at a range of about 500 yards, sinking the target.

At 06:15 hours we spotted two more IJN submarines surfacing ahead. We waited for the first to pass our position and then fired a single torpedo from the bow tubes and one from the stern tubes, both at a range of about 500 yards. Sunk both targets, we surfaced and recharged our batteries and resumed our patrol.

On April 16 at about 11:29 hours we spotted a small convoy of four Marus and two escorts. We set-up on a large Oil Tanker and fired a single torpedo at it. It was a dud so we fired our last two torpedoes at the target, one dud and one hit, sinking the target. We dove to avoid the escorts and were depth charged without any damage to the boat. After loosing the escorts we surfaced and headed for Pearl.

Comments: The MK IV magnetic exploder is definitely not working properly and should be deactivated, and I believe there are other problems with the torpedoes as well. Out of 24 torpedoes fired we had the following results:

Misses due to under runs     -     3

Dud torpedoes                       -     7

Hits                                          -   14

Premature                               -     0
