Narrative:
Wednesday,
10 Dec. 1941: Came across a Jap Task Force (TF) of 1 Nagato Class
Battleship, 1 Fuso Class Battleship, 1 Mogami Class Heavy Cruiser, 1 Myoko
Class Heavy Cruiser, and 2 Escorts named above @ 08:00 hrs. 10 Dec. 1941, in
P-9 (19 degrees, 30 Minutes North; 122 degrees, 25 Minutes East). Speed of TF
is 19 kts. Range; 2,800 yds. As the Salmon went to periscope depth, and turned
to hard to port, setup Mk-14's torpedo's at 41 feet as ordered, 10 ft. below
the keel of the Nagato Battleship with a slow speed setting. Fired all bow
tubes (4 tubes). As the stern came around, fired the stern tube (4 tubes fast
setting) also. With the same setup. Cut speed of the Salmon to 1/3 spd on a
course of 280 degrees. 2 Mk-14's prematured at a range of 2,000 yds from the
Salmon. The other 8 torpedo's went right under the Nagato Battleship. 3 torpedo’s
exploded at a range of about 3,500 yds. 3 torpedo’s exploded at a range of
about 9,000 yds. My guess is 1 long & 1 short torpedo prematured on the way
to the target. As the DD's were heading for the explosion's of the torpedo's
the Salmon was able too make good her escape from the area @ 10:30 hrs. TF
turned to 090 degrees, speed 22 kts. Then turned to about 175 degrees when the
Salmon lost them by the lookouts. Sent off a (FLASH!)
report to base about the sighting. Salmon is still on patrol in her area ('s).
PH needs to do something with the torpedo's. Something's NOT right.
Thursday,
11 Dec. 1941:
14:00hrs. Lookouts reported a
sighting. 2 Battleships, 2 Destroyers coming right for the Salmon. Went to
periscope depth, and waited for them too come to us.
14:10hrs. Looked in the scope. TF
still coming on. Course 170* to 190*.
14:15hrs. Setup Salmon for a course
of 315* as the Salmon is setting up for this BIG BOY up forward of the
column.
14:30hrs. Looked in the periscope to
see if the TF was still coming on. It was; Range: 5,000 yds, Spd., 20 kts.
Course 180*. Salmon is stopped in the water.
14:45hrs. Can hear propellers.
Looked in the scope to see the FAT BOY at 2,500 yds. Set Salmon spd to 2/3. Set
torpedo's as ordered 42 ft., fired 4 bow tubes, and turned to hard to starboard
to line up the stern tube. Fired 4 stern tubes, same settings as bow. ALL
torpedo’s set for slow speed.
14:48hrs. Heard pinging start up as
the Salmon heard an explosion. Looked in scope to see the torpedo wakes in the
background of the FAT BOY. DAMN torpedo's.
14:49hrs. FAT BOY is heading at
225*, Spd., 22kts.
15:00hrs. Salmon is heading to
200ft., Spd., 1/3, Course 090*.
15:15hrs. NO pinging in the
background. Coming to periscope depth for a look see.
15:22hrs. NO TF in sight.
16:00hrs. Surfaced to re-charge
battery's. Still Heavy overcast, Sky's are gray all around. Well still patrol
this area until Friday.
Evening
of 11 Dec. 1941:
20:00hrs. Lookouts report ships.
20:02hrs. 1 Kuma Light Cruiser, 1
Destroyer. Range: 9,000 yds. Spd. 21kts., Course 180* coming to 225*. Ordered
Salmon to periscope depth, Course 045*, Spd. 2/3.
20:15hrs. Light Cruiser group still
holding at 225*
20:20hrs. Setup last 4-bow torpedo's
to 25ft. as ordered. Set for slow.
20:25hrs. Kuma is dead in the path
of the Salmon. Range: 1,200yds.
20:26hrs. Fired 4 bow tubes at 8
seconds a part.
20:30hrs. Looked in the scope to see
the Salmon's handy work, only to find ALL torpedo's going off in the distance
as the Cruiser group is heading away from the Salmon. DAMN torpedo's.
20:45hrs. NO TF in sight.
21:00hrs. Surfaced to re-charge
batteries.
23:59hrs. No torpedo's left only
deck rounds. Something needs to be done about the torpedo's (Mk-14’s). As we
checked all the settings for the last attack. An double-checked them again
before firing them. Salmon is Returning to base.
