Patrol
Narrative:
Entered assigned patrol area Feb.16, 1942 at 21-48N, 145-10E.Proceeded
to patrol a line to a point due west of Guam in sector NM2.While on surface at
night, encountered lone troopship at 13-50N, 145-11E.Fiured 3 torpedo’s at a
setting of 30 ft per fleet orders.1 prematured and apparently other 2 passed
under ship as I fired at a range of 1900 yds. I then proceeded to use deck gun
after making certain of no escorts. Took 22 rounds to sink Troop ship. Also
fired additional 3 torpedo’s at ship, but they too missed.
On the morning to Feb 19 1942
while patrolling same general area, I decided to move in closer to Guam. At
06:58 sighted a 3-ship convoy heading on a westerly course from Guam. Seas were
somewhat rough because of a storm the previous night. I tried too use this to
gain an advantage on convoy by making an end run to gain position ahead of
them. I apparently was sighted because they made a hard turn to starboard and
headed on a northerly heading. I came to a heading of 010 degrees, standard
speed and proceeded to chase them. At a range of about 4200 yds. I fired 3
torpedo’s at Small Freighter. ALL MISSED. at a range of 3600 yds. I turned
slightly to port to give deck gun a firing angle. Due to rough seas it took 70
rounds to sink Freighter. Gun Crew needs practice BAD. Sunk Small Freighter and
had 3 rounds left. Sighted another Freighter and fired 3 torpedo’s and
remaining deck guns at it,1 prematured and 2 under runs. Turned hard left to
bring stern tubes to bear. Fired 4 torpedo’s, All Under run past ship. As I
continued Port turn ,Crew had managed to load 1 bow tube. Fired it, IT TOO
MISSED. Said "Hell with these torpedo’s" returned too Pearl with 7
"Torpedo’s" if you want to call them that. Recommend returning to
contact exploder.
