Sledgehammer
The Athlon 64, Athlon 64 FX, and Athlon 64 Mobile were all released on September 23rd, 2003. The Athlon 64 FX was clocked 200MHz higher at release and featured a dual-channel memory controller. With the exception of using the Socket 940, requiring ECC memory, and the aforementioned dual-channel memory controller; the Athlon 64 FX is almost the same as the regular Athlon 64. One minor difference that does not affect performance is the ability to change multipliers. The regular Athlon 64 has locked multipliers while the AThlon 64 FX doesn't. This allows overclockers to achieve higher speeds while maintaining stability. The Athlon 64 FX will remain AMD's top of the line offering for the life of the 64-bit generation. The Athlon 64 FX-53 is the fastest processor in the world.*
