President's Message

We are now entering the month of March during which we will hold gand look forward to seven Open Labs in the Center. Open Labs are those sessions when we have several Coaches on hand to answer your questions and help you with problems you are having with your computer. For those of you are just getting started in the computer world, we will show you how to use a conventional keyboard and mouse when working with a computer. We have two great programs that will help you to get up and running with both a keyboard and a mouse. Ask one of our coaches about them.

We have two training courses that we expect to conduct sometime in March. The first is an introduction to the hardware involved in a typical computer system and how to use a keyboard and mouse to perform various tasks. The second course, Introduction to Windows XP,will introduce you to the various facets of the Windows operating system. We have not yet set firm dates for these two courses. When we firm up the dates for these courses we will post the dates on two websites, www.computerctr.org and www.leisureline.org.

We also plan to offer what we refer to as Dropin Classes. These are sessions where all you have to do is drop in on the scheduled day for the course. These sessions are free the only cost might be a small fee for a handout covering the subject of the day. Here are a few of those Dropins we expect to hold in the near future. In no particular order the sessions are Spreadsheets, Hardware Technology, Cut-Copy-Paste, Fundamentals, and one session I jokingly refer to as I Hate My Mouse What Can I Do? This latter one will introduce you to the many alternative keystrokes that you can use instead of using the mouse.

Did you know, for example, that you can display the Windows Explorer window (which shows the file makeup of the computer) by holding down the Windows Key then tapping the letter E? There are many like this that we will demonstrate for you. As I mentioned before, take a look at our website for more information about our schedules.

Remember that we have the Center open from Monday through Friday all through the month 9:30 11:30 am and 1:30-3:30. If you want to drop in and check your email or just fiddle around on the Internet come on in!!! We also have a lot of information on our bulletin board so drop in a take a look at what we have to offer you.

As an aside to those of you who are fairly well versed in how to work with a computer, feel free to volunteer your service as a Monitor your fellow computer users will appreciate your service. If you are interested in knowing more about our Monitor program give a call to Bob Hughes at 301-340-0922, or chat with one of us at the Center. I have found that I personally advance my knowledge in the computer world by fielding questions. So, drop in and chat with us about how you might help.
