Problem: design an algorithm to show how you go to work
English prose: how to go to work
Pseudocode: BEGIN
Wake up
Put your alarm off
Brush your teeth
Have your shower
Get dressed
Have your breakfast
Walk to the train station
Go to work
Meet a guy
IF he is handsome
THEN go out with him
ELSE look for another hot guy
END IF
WHILE he's interesting
Keep going out with him
ENDWHILE
REPEAT
Start going home
UNTIL you are there
END
FORTRAN- PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE
Fortran was first developed by a team of programmers in IBM which was led by John Backus and then it was first published in 1957.The name Fortan is an acronym for FORmula TRANslation, because it was designed to allow easy translation of math formulas into code.
Fortran was used because computer programmers were required to program in machine/ assembly code, which was an extremely difficult and time consuming task, not to mention the dreadful chore of debugging the code. The objective during it's design was to create a programming language that would be : simple to learn, suitable for a wide variety of applications, machine independent, and would allow complex mathematical expressions to be stated similarly to algebraic notation.
Significant features:
Simple to learn- when Fortran was design one of the objectives was to write a language that was easy to learn and understand.
Machine independent - allows for easy transportation of a program from one to another.
More natural ways to express mathematical functions- FORTRAN permits even severely complex mathematical functions to be expressed similarly to algebraic notation.
Problem orientated language-Fortran was the first high level used. it is object orientated which is quite popular since the last ten years.
Structures which it uses:
Examples of structures which it uses is loops and if blocks. Data is also allowed to be structured through the use of pointers and structures. Both these features allow for greater modularity, clarity and more compact code.
