Col. John Hite was one of the sons of Hans Jost Hite (Heydt). John Hite built his Springdale home on his father's land in Frederick County, Virginia, in 1753.
George Washington was a 16-year old surveyor of Jost Hite's land. While on this particular job, the former President stayed at Springdale. He later wrote in his diary of the hospitality he experienced while staying there.
As late at 1940, Springdale was still in use, although it went through a few changes.
