| Links in Yahoo Messenger Freeze up or are not openable Yahoo Companion and Yahoo Explorer Bar seem to be the cause of this. Perhaps in the messenger update something was overlooked? The Link Freeze seems to be rare so it may be some system related thing in the individual's computer. The fix is simple - Go to add-remove programs in the control panel and uninstall the Yahoo search bar programs. This has restored the use of links in yahoo PMs in most cases for messengers with this bug. Yahoo Java Chat with Windows XP I recently had the pleasure of reformatting a computer with XP, isn't Windows a wonderful thing ( haha ). Unfortunately, due to all of the lawsuits between Sun and Microsoft, they java virtual machine was nowhere to be found on Microsoft's XP download site (AGAIN!). So off to www.sun.com to get a virtual machine. Of course, when I went to load the java chat at Yahoo, the wonderful activeX stuff didn't work !! Here is the fix! ::: Load the java 2.0 then change the URL ending from =2 to =1 , then click GO and load the new URL and the sun VM works at Yahoo WITH VOICE TOO!! Yahoo Chat and Windows Messenger Spam Q: Are these spam pop ups targeted by the 'bots" ? Windows messenger is a new twist on the old messaging service service that has been around since Win95. messenger.exe (not to be confused with MSN messenger) utilizes svchost.exe (udp/tcp 135). The spammers use the net send command to send the spam message to an IP block. If you don't understand IP protocol - its your internet address ( license plate or computer number ). So, the feeling that you are being 'targeted' is true and false. Your IP block is being targeted but not you individually. The spammer is sending a message to a block of IP numbers in multiples of 225 addresses. If you are not on a corporate network that is employing messenger.exe you can disable svchost.exe as administrator in the Services and Applications program in NT/W2000/XP. Here are some links with instructions on how to do this- Or, you can use a configurable firewall to block TCP/UDP 135 from connecting to the internet. Kerio Personal Firewall does a nice job of this and its free. YahELite Build 282 released YahELite the "unofficial" yahoo chat client is still out there with voice and a messenger protocol. YahELite supports yahoo cams using Yah-Sho as the uploader and Yah-See at the viewer. You must download the yahoo cam compoments in the java or the DHTML2 chat for the cam options to work. YahELite makes no changes to your registry and installs no DLLs. YahELite is practically hack and boot proof, written in 'C' by David J. Binette. YahELite now has its own installer program. If you don't like getting booted and being PM'd by the spam bots try YahELite. Download
YahELite Y-Condom - An old anti-boot program for Messenger... Y-Condom is a new beta program that my friend DraFt wrote in an effort to keep messenger chat users safe from cam invite and voice booters. Simply download it from the link below and save it to desktop. Double-click to start it, it loads in the systems tray, set the protection options from the program's menu and runs automatically. NOTE: This program may not be compatable with new messenger versions and/or windows XP/NT. If you try it you may need to stop it from the task manager (01/06/2004) Using Tambu dummy server to alter Peer2Peer connections in yahoo messenger and voice chat... Yahoo chat and messenger can be forced to use ports of your choosing by blocking the default ports with the Tambu dummy server. The default port for yahoo voice is 5000 UDP. However, connections can be made at 5000-5011. Tip: try running the Tambu dummy server on 5000 UDP, set up the Tambu before starting the voice conference. If a boot program is ported to attack 5000 it will attack the dummy server (in theory). The new Yahoo messenger uses peer to peer connections, in other words the pm-s go to your friends puter instead of first to the yahoo server. If you set the Tambu dummy server to 5101 TCP before you open the Yahoo messenger it will force the messenger to use a random TCP port for these connections, maybe protecting the messenger from illegal operations. NEW -- anti-crash program stops YAHOO! messenger "illegal operations" This freeware program has been tested to stop "illegal operation" shutdowns and pager boots in chat. It also seems to improve overall performance in Windows 9x platforms. The program loads at start-up and you launch a java applet that multi-threads windows processes. Read my notes in the set up file regarding how to use it --ENJOY :O) User IPs revealed in YAHOO! Messenger... The new beta Yahoo messengers will reveal your IP address when instant messaging and transferring files. The IP address is revealed by netstat command or a netstat utility. Once your ip is revealed you may be subject to a dDos ( denial of service attack, boot code or illegal shutdown aka: kernel32.dll error ) WIN2K and Yahoo chat in messenger installation... If you are running W2K and want to install Yahoo's beta messenger, if you are not logged in as administrator - on installation the voice in chat will not work!
Repairing and reinstalling a damaged Yahoo! Messenger.... First be sure that the messenger problem is in your computer. Sometimes the fault is at the yahoo server. If you are sure that it is your messenger, run the un-installer from the Yahoo program file or the add remove applet in the control panel. Do the custom uninstall and select all in each message box. When finished don't forget to delete the C:\Program Files\Yahoo! folder. You might want to have a look in there first. See what was left. The log file will be there. I have found that the normal un-install will leave 8-12 registry entries for the messenger. The custom / full un-install will leave 3-5 registry entries. The next step is tricky... (WARNING! The following instructions require editing of the Windows registry. Improper editing can damage the registry and cause the operating system to fail! I do not warrant the following instructions to be correct for every computer. By using this editing guide you acknowledge your acceptance of the terms of these instructions – YOU DID IT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!) That being said ;0).... Go to RUN type the command REGEDIT >OK. The registry editor is now open. VERY IMPORTANT!.. go to Registry at top and export a complete registry back up to a folder somewhere. Now go to Edit at the top and select find in the text box enter >yahoo messenger. Now run the find (find button or F3 on the keyboard. Any data in the right pane found containing the phrase yahoo messenger is safe to modify the string value to "" or none . Right click on the data icons > modify >delete the data. As to deleting the Keys ( folders on the left ), use extreme caution. Keep hitting the F3 key till Yahoo! Is no more. Reboot and install the messenger from the setup.exe file that u saved from the Yahoo! Program files or a fresh one from Yahoo! As you prefer... and DO NOT store your password in the messenger - type it in each time! How to remove an off line message bomb from Yahoo! messenger... Should you or a friend encounter an offline message bomb that boots you off when you log in here's how to get rid of it -- go to "C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\StoredIM" and copy the files in that folder to an empty folder; then compress the folder into a zip file and send the zip file with a complaint to [email protected] (might as well get the creep that did it to ya!). Now go back to the above folder and delete the files. Now log in -- you should be ok again :o))

MSN Chat activeX buffer overflow revealed... Microsoft admits that a buffer overflow vulnerability
exists the the MSN chat activeX control that ships with the new 4.5 MSN
messenger. Microsoft security bulletin and patch The new MSN Messenger seems to be leaking (or sending data) when idle via UDP connections...I recently noticed that the new MSN messenger is sending data in UDP packets when idle. At first I thought it might have been advertising, but the data was going out - advertising comes IN!! And why the connection to xp.mcaffee.com?? Well, I uninstalled it and reinstalled the old one from a saved file. I wonder what the folks at microsoft are doing with my data from their bloatware messenger- Bill G. prove me wrong!! Reeezak worm using MSN to spread "An email bearing New Year greetings also contains a malicious worm that is spreading in Europe and the US, according to experts. Reeezak, also known as W32/Reeezak.A@mm, W32/Zacker.C@mm and W32.Maldal.C@mm, masquerades as a Macromedia Flash holiday greeting christmas.exe. The worm, which infects Windows-based systems, uses Microsoft Outlook and MSN Messenger to collect email addresses. It also deletes the Windows System Directory, disables antivirus software and has the ability to disable selective keys on an infected user's keyboard" Hackers Like MSN's Passport too... "The problem is that it's (passport) also a great convenience for hackers and thieves. All they need is your e-mail address and password to go anywhere you go because Passport requires that you use your e-mail address as your user ID and that you use a single password for all Passport-enabled sites. Worse, because Microsoft is also tying its Wallet service to the Passport, they can also spend your money and get your credit card information. Windows 95/Me API reveals clear text. Bugtoaster's discovery is related to the Windows dial-up networking (DUN) application on the client side. An API that DUN shares with other applications retrieves the Passport credentials from an encrypted file. When a Windows 9x/Me user logs in to the Passport Data Center, the API passes sign-on information in clear text from one process to another in memory, where a worm could easily find the information because it's an area specified in the API for Windows." Virtual basic worms can spread in MSN Messenger.. Thanks to the Visual Basic 6, Msvbvm60.dll and
Windows Script Host your MSN Messenger can send files to your buddies
without you initiating a file transfer. I personally encountered W32.Annoying.Worm,
while it is not a high level threat, it's purpose is just to spread across
the MSN IM network. Well, it wouldn't take much to add one of the new
binary trojans that will slip through your anti-virus program to "jerry"
the name given to the worm by its author-"I come in piece (s.i.c.
...). My name is Jerry. The purpose of me is to spread. I'm not annoying,
nor dangerous." |

| AIM
messenger has new security hole -- AOL says servers will be patched soon!
"A security flaw in America Online's [NYSE:AOL] popular online chat program could allow a remote attacker silently to penetrate the computer of users of the software, security experts said today. The vulnerability in AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) for Windows could enable a malicious person to write a self-propagating program, or "worm," that could use AIM to spread itself to users in a victim's "buddy list," according to the security research group that discovered the bug, w00w00 Security Development." Booting AIM users with buffer overloads... "Instant messaging, a faster and more direct form of e-mail that allows written conversations and file transfers, is growing faster than the Internet according to researchers. The speed and vigor of programs that make it perfect for a quick chat are also becoming attractive as ways to launch a quick attack, security analysts say. ...Lambiris' program proved capable of shutting down the AOL program by overwhelming it with data, a so-called buffer overload attack..."
"AOL's reliance on a technology called
virtual private networking (VPN) may defeat the ability of some personal
firewalls to guard users against hackers and Internet worms, according
to the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), a federally funded information
security clearinghouse. "We'll see personal firewalls block scans
from things like Code Red or Nimda, but when the scan hits an AOL-connected
computer, it passes through the firewall inside the VPN connection,"
said Kevin Houle, Internet security analyst with CERT." Brian McWilliams,
