Bring It On Again Bonus!
In the February issue of AC we brought you the inside scoop on the sequel to the
ultimate cheer movie: Bring It On. But the stars of Bring It On Again—Anne
Judson-Yager, Faune Chambers and Bree Turner—had so much more to share! Read on
for BIOA facts and tidbits you’ll find only on americancheerleader.com.
The New Crew
In the original film, stars Kirsten Dunst,
Eliza Dushku and Gabrielle Union portrayed cheerleaders in a positive light,
showing viewers the hard work, originality and competitive spirit it takes to
win. Throw in the fact that the movie was absolutely hilarious and it’s no
surprise that the flick raked in beaucoup bucks! The decision to make a sequel
to the runaway hit was pretty much a no-brainer, but finding the right leading
ladies to fill the original actresses’ cheer shoes was no small task. Kirsten
Dunst had gone on to make the blockbuster Spiderman, while Gabrielle Union and
Eliza Dushku were electrifying the big and small screens in Bad Boys 2 and "Tru
Calling." It was apparent that a whole new squad would need to be auditioned.
Enter Anne Judson-Yager (Whittier), Faune Chambers (Monica) and Bree Turner
(Tina).
Once these three ladies were deemed worthy to carry on the spirit stick, the
ball started rolling fast. Filming schedules were tight and the athletes had to
be camera-ready within just a few weeks. Choreographer Tony Gonzalez had his
work cut out for him.
An old church gym in Hollywood was the chosen location for the Renegades and
Mustangs to learn their routines. For eight hours a day for 12 days, the actors
practiced facials, stunting, motions and the flashy dance routines that would
make the movie so exciting to watch. Elements of martial arts, funk, ballet and
jazz were incorporated into the routines, which meant lots of legwork
(literally) on the part of the actresses. And now that the film is complete, the
three leading ladies can hold their own in any tryout and have a whole new
appreciation for cheerleaders. Here are the impressions that Anne, Bree and
Faune took away from the movie:
Anne: "Cheerleading is absolutely a sport, just as much as figure skating or
gymnastics. It’s come a long way and it’s really amazing."
Bree: "After cheer camp and working with the top cheerleaders in the nation, I
realized how incredibly hard cheering is. You have to work as a unit, as a team;
you can’t just be an individual. You have be a really good athlete to be the
best."
Faune: "I think it’s great for girls to cheer. There is such a spirit of joy,
freedom and encouragement. It’s good to develop team skills and you really carry
them outside of cheerleading. Once you cheer, you’re a cheerleader for life!"
‘Nuff said.
Behind-the-Scenes Secrets
Get in the know with these exclusive filming tidbits:
Quittin’ Time: Long days sometimes call for drastic cheer measures! The
"real-life" cheerleaders weren’t accustomed to the standard 14-hour days that
actresses often put in. When the end of the day was near, director Damon
Santostefano would tell the crew to "Check the gate." In true cheer form, the
cheerleaders performed a cheer each day to hurry it along: "Check the gate,
check check the gate, go home!"
Pigeon Probs: Bree confesses that her left foot is pigeon-toed, which made for
some interesting cheer challenges! "If you watch carefully in the movie for all
of my kicks, herkies and toe touches, my left foot drags and is very lazy."
Hollywood Magic: Though Anne performs all of her own stunts, the gymnastics were
a different story. Her victorious audition and tumbling passes through the
campus quad? "Not me."
A Language All Their Own: The film’s fun vocab included phrases like "ridick"
(ridiculous), "discush" (discussion) and "the bomb diggity" (need we say more?).
Bree says she and co-star Joie Lenz (who plays pal Marni) had a blast ad-libbing
some of the crazy dialogue. "Damon was so fantastic because he allowed us to
play and improvise. As actors, we felt free to be as ridiculous as we wanted to
be!"
Star Extras
Anne Judson-Yager
Character Name: Whittier
Fave Scene: "I had a lot of fun in the scene where I’m running across the quad
and backflipping around the park."
Cheers to the first BIO: "I saw it and liked it. [When I took on this role],
they never asked me to act like Kirsten Dunst. My character is very different
[than hers was]. But it was nice to have some plot similarities because it had
to somewhat mirror the original or else it wouldn’t be a sequel."
Bree Turner
Character Name: Tina
Fave Scene: "The scene I enjoyed the most was when Tina freaks out on Faune’s
character and makes her do 10,000 Herkies. All the big performance scenes were
also a blast and catapulted me into my old days as a dancer."
Cheers to the first BIO: "It’s a cult classic in my book. My girlfriends and I
saw it twice and had a great time watching it in the theater!"
Faune A. Chambers
Character Name: Monica
Fave Scene: Faune loved when Monica and Whittier teach some moves to the
cheer-challenged Renegade team: "It was such a nice example of how great things
happen when different people from various backgrounds put their minds on the
same goal."
Cheers to the first BIO: "The cheer genre in the movies is great fun to watch
and be a part of. I was very grateful to be part of this sequel."
