Most people would agree that public television is one of the worst forms of entertainment ever created (in fact, Sir Rants a Lot who used to appear in my Other Rants page, had numerous articles about how bad it was). However, I suppose that I am pretty lucky compared to the drivle that is broadcasted on the American stations. There are hardly any religious programs, except for a couple on Saturday afternoons, but lucky for me there are presented in Greek so I can't understand them (strangely enough, it's on the large networks that the bulk of relgious programming is broadcasting, usually at the highly sought after primetime slot of about 5 or 6 am). There are also other weird programs that are secular (or politically) based. For example, there are many programs that feature anti-war protesters and trade unionists on most nights. But recently I have discovered a much more disturbing show on public access TV, and surprisingly it involves the rather mild concept of history.
I believe that there is always an objective history, that is, there is only one historical account of anything ever done. This account is based on truth; about what really happened. When people try to change history, it usually becomes a form of propaganda, of brainwashing, of introctrination. An example of which is what the Nazis used to do in the 30's and 40's, whereby they taught school children that Germany hadn't really lost World War One. They were forced to surrender because people (such as communists) has "stabbed them in the back". Of course, records kept at this time prove that Germany was pretty much screwed by 1918. I mean, four years of war would usually do that to a country that is suffering from a naval blockade by the most powerful navy in the world (at that time), the Royal Navy (from Britain).
As you can see, changing history can be used to distort the facts, and it is this very process that forces people to do something about it (in the example about the Nazis, it seemed to the former students, now soldiers, that it was perfectly legitamate to start a new war to "reclaim Germany's honour"). It can have pretty dramatic results. Then you could probably imagine my surprise when I came across a show on public access that said that the whole of the modern world was founded by Arabs.
The show I am refering to is
We and this World. It comes from Syria and seems to give a pro-Arab (and hence anti-Israel) depiction on the creation of civilisation. Sure, Damascus, Syria's capital, is the oldest capital city in the world. But the show goes much further than this to "prove" their point.
This show has two presenters. One is pretty much like me. He asks questions about how truthful certain historical accounts are, and uses reasoning to make a judgement about which actually happened. He is the host (who will from now on be refered to as Blackie because of his black hair). The guest (which is a rather strange word to use since he appears in every single show) is the one I am targeting. He is the one that says that the Syrians and Phonecians were the ones who created the civilised world that we live in today. From now on, he will be refered ..........
