I believe it was Homer Simpson who once said that "people are afraid of new things" after, in one episode of The Simpsons, his half brother Herb builds a baby translator. However, the majority of other people thought it was an incredible invention and by the end of the show, Herb became rich off it. In a case like this, it would have been very likely that Homer proclaimed his famous catch phrase "d'oh" after being proved wrong.
The above anecdote appears to be a perfect way to start off today's rant. In recent months there have been many attempts by certain people to get rid of Kazaa, the world's most biggest and most popular file sharing program. There are few teenagers that live in the Western world who haven't used (let alone heard) the wonderment that is Kazaa. Not only can you share many different types of programs to your fellow Internet users, but there is also a wealth of information that can be found here (you'd be surprised how much stuff on philosophy and World War Two they have on Kazaa).
But surely, the greatest advantage of Kazaa is the fact that you have the ability to download music for free. Now, for most people, this would be a wonderful inovation. But for a select few, it is their ultimate nightmare. For you see, this select group loses out from the popularity of Kazaa. Who are they, I hear you ask? Well, it isn't the music fans, or the other users of Kazaa, that's for sure! It isn't the developers or programmers of Kazaa, who have been steamrolled by some multi-million dollar software company for exploitation. No. It is the music industry. Producers, chairmen, record contractors, even music artists, have a grudge againt Kazaa. And this grudge is making a whole spectrum of others start to go against the music industry, from the most girlish boy-band popstar fan to the most hardened communist.
Sure, like many things in life, Kazaa is not perfect. It is used by "hackers" to infect other people's computers with viruses. I do believe that something similar forced my internet service provider to disconnect me for six weeks and hence, temporarly discontinue work on this site. It is also another portal from which all types of pornography is accessible from. It has also irritated many users who can not download files because it requires "more sources" for download or is "queued". There are also some files that, at first glance, might seem like full version games, but are acutally "full version demos" in which you can only play the game for an hour before you have to buy the real version. My brother has become a victim of this many times.
As you can see, Kazaa has some bugs in it. But this also makes you wonder what bugs the music industry so much about this program. Well, the answer is about to be revealed.
The invention of the recording phonograph (record player) by Edison in the later 1800's gave people ideas about how you can be rich. Back then, you could record your voice or music on wax cylinders, and these weren't cheap. So the manufacturers of these wax cylinders made big money. As the years went by, a new form of ..........
