| Since Pong, the world's first ever computer game, came into existence in the early 1970's, computer games have become one of the most popular forms of entertainment in out time. Computer games are certainly enjoyable... for some of us. For others, it's an obsession. You become addicted to computer games. It becomes your life. But we're not talking about just any old computer games, oh no! It has to be one with good graphics! And this is where it really starts to go wrong. For you see, some people only buy computer games not for game play, not for price, not even for type; but for graphics. Yes, some people actually buy games just because the graphics are good. I know tons of people that behave like this. This really sickens and pisses me off! Let's face it folks. Graphics only contribute to only something like 10% to the enjoyment of a game. I mean, which do you prefer; playing the actual game or watching long, boring and uninteractive movie clips all day long? Most people would reply to the former. Who in all seriousness would buy a game just for movie clips? I can see that an example is needed here. Let's look at two very, VERY similar games; Delta Force 1 and Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix. Now, look at the plot of the games. In both games, basically all you do is fight terrorists, rebels, anything that is against the United States, blah, blah, blah (such a cliche). Now, I reckon that you probably have never even heard of Delta Force 1 even though it's only been out for one year. But Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix is more popular apparently because it solely has better graphics; not because of game play, but because of graphics. What stupidity! At my school last year, I'd say only about half of the 70 or 80 Year 8's had a computer. Only about 10 or 15 of that figure purchased a computer within a year. I bought my computer in mid-2000, so I was in the "range" or "zone". Now this year, I went to a better school with about 350 Year 9's. Now, from what I gathered, I estimated that approxiamately 95% had a computer, and about 90% of that figure brought a new computer only within the past 3 to 6 months! So why have people nowadays become what I'd like to call "slaves of technology"? I mean, even 12 year olds have mobile phones. People can't live without the Internet and e-mail. Everything analog is now being swept aside for the digital revolution. Hell, even the term "internet superhighway" is considered macabre. Part of this "slavery" is comprised of the fact that some teenagers buy games for good graphics. You see, there are tons of games out there where it isn't a critical matter if the graphics are not perfect. I remember a few years ago when I still had a Commodore 64 lying in the cupboard. I had tons of games there. I had the original Mario Brothers game, Robocop (which was pretty gay, since if you died if you got hit by 5 bullets), Pacman, Le Mans (a dodgy racing game which looked like Spy Hunter except you couldn't shoot anyone), Fruit Loops (a casino pokies game, the name is also is breakfast cereal), SWAT (one thing compounded me on this game: if you were a criminal, wouldn't you go for ........ |
