The famous Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde once said that "it is absurd to have a hard-and-fast rule about what one should read and what one shouldnt. More than half of modern culture depends on what one shouldnt read.'' If he is right, than the book After the End of the World by English author Eric Johns makes up this "half of modern culture'' because no one should read a book with such filth in it. Let me tell you a little bit about the story. It's about this 14 year old girl named Cindy, who is frozen in what's called a "Hibernation Programme" for 50 years after the planet Earth is wiped out by a mysterious disease. She is also with some other teens, presumably her friends. Now, there are still people living on Earth, it's just that they think that disease has wiped out civilisation because of the fact that God didn't like technology. So, from then on, the people of this 'new world' believe that all forms of technology are evil.

Now, you'd think that this would be one of those books where there will be a lot of excitement and action in it. Well, you couldn't be more further from the truth. There are only two that I can think of; Industrials are like slaves and are people who came in

contact with technology. Then there are the Wardens, who are like guards and survey the Industrials as they do their work. Now, in one part near the middle of the book, Cindy and another friend, contact each other using radios which they took from 'the Base' (the place where they hibernated for 50 years). Now, one thing shocks me. Obviously since there are people around you who will kill you if they found you with a radio, you have to hide it somewhere. Now, of all the places Cindy had to hide her radio, it was none other than a burnt-out building only metres away from where the Wardens were keeping guard over the Industrials. Pretty dumb don't you think? But then again, the book describes that she had blonde hair. That says it all, doesn't it? And now another issue is raised; the incompitence of the Wardens to do their job. I've already explained one aspect in the fact that they couldn't find Cindy with the radio, but there are other mistakes as well. One of them is the fact that if Cindy was so close to the Wardens, well ......
