History of Linux

In 1991, Linus Torvald was a second year student of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki and a hacker. This Finnish student loved to tinker with computers and their limits.

In August 25, 1991, Linus sent this email to the MINIX news group!

Hello everybody out there using minix - I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing ; since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things). I've currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40),and things seem to work. This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, andI'd like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them :-)

Linus ([email protected])

PS. Yes - it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(.
Name and Releashes

Linus himself didn't believe that his creation was going to be big enough to change computing forever.Linux 0.01 was releashed in mid-September. People tested it and added codes to it. Linux 0.02 came out on October 5th. In weeks, newer versions came out to better support the daily needs of people. Linux then put in a GUI. Linux also went through the trouble to find a name that would attract people to it. People were afraid of OS's that had names such as 386BSD. "386BSD sounds to technical"- Linus Torvald History of Tux
It all began when Linux needed a mascot. There was a contest. Linus, however, was looking for something fun and appealing. They decided to go with a penguin that had just stocked up on herring. So remember, Tux is not fat! Linus always liked penguins. He also got bit by one in a zoo.
