After camping out, a detachment of the 121st, with full equipment, marches off to join the rest of their comrades at the Morrow County Fairgrounds in Mount Gilead, Ohio.
           This page containes the clothing and equipment recommended by the 121st Ohio.  This will allow you to attend most basic reenactments and get you started on a fun and exciting hobby.  Certainly there are a variety of uniform choices, but these are the basics and most universal in Civil War reenacting. 
            We recommend the following sutlers (or reenacting merchandizers) for your purchases.  They are reliable and have good quality equipment that is up to the authenticity standards that the company holds.

U.S. "Sack" Coat: Fatigue coat, in service from Mid-1862 to the end of the war.  Dark blue, four buttons, comes down to about mid-thigh.

Cartridge Box and Sling: A leather box for holding your ammunition.  1855 model.  Ammunition tins do not need to be used.  No Enfield pattern.  Sling to hang your box from over the shoulder.  Box and breast plates can be added for adornment, but are not required.  Maintain the same type as the belt plate.

Muskets: Model 1861 .58 caliber Springfield Rifle Musket: Standard Army Issue.  This is what the original 121st Ohio carried throughout much of the war.  3 band (no 2 band muskets) muzzleloading rifle musket.  Percussion firing.

Model 1853 .577 caliber Enfield Rifle Musket: Originally imported from England, these muskets were brought in to make up difference that U.S. armories couldn't provide.  Equal to that of the Springfield.  3 band only.  Tulip on end of ramrod makes for great cleaning patch holder and wider half-cock provides for easier placement of percussion cap, but otherwise no difference from the Springfield.  Enfield steel is blued, which is incorrect.  The British "browned" their muskets.  The 121st never carried this type, but because Enfields were so common and so much like Springfields, they are readily accepted.

Haversacks: Used to carry a soldier's rations.  But good for carrying some small equipment.  Tarred canvas bag only!  No untarred.  Buckled flap and internal pouch.

Does the price shock you!  We can help!
           Looking at all these prices may make your wallet groan.  But think of all the other hobbies out there and how expensive they are.  You can easily put down $10,000 for a good motorcycle, and boats for fishing can be quite expensive.  Even stamp collecting can start reaching high numbers.  Plus, Civil War reenacting is currently the cheapest of all the living history interpretations out there.  A flintlock musket can cost as low as $1000 and a Continental uniform jacket currently stands at $300.  After what you buy here, you're pretty well set.  Our trips are fairly cheap, just the price of gas to get there (carpooling is a more effecient and enjoyable way of travel) and the cost of food. 
            However, if it's still hard to pull that wallet out, know that your comrades of the 121st are still here to help.  Over the years we have acquired extra uniforms (whether through donation or purchase) that we loan out.  These are not purchasable or "rent to own," but borrowing them is a free service of the 121st.  We do have selected sizes.  We do expect you to purchase your own uniform, but in this way your costs can be spread out.  This also provides you an opportunity to try out reenacting for the simple costs of the immediate event.  Once you've tried it, we know you'll enjoy it.  So, come on and give it a try.
