| A Little bit of THE HISTORY | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| THE COMPANY was created in 1993 by actors (Les Martin, Damian Gillen and Ken Bradley,) Actor /Producers whose goal was to do quality, dramatic & comic theatre primarily for audiences who had not likely seen a play before. Our focus: to produce the original playscripts ther were made into feature films and major motion pictures. We present live theatre as an viable alternative to a night watching television or going to the movies It is generally thought that no theatre company will ever be able to compete with movies, MTV and Sony Playstations but THE COMPANY has always felt that the right scripts, a talented cast, and an enthused technical staff will draw even the biggest couch potato to the theatre...And we have! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| In 1993 the first show we staged the Texas premiere of A Few Good Men at the Acting studio. This show was later picked up by Live Oak Theatre for a four week extension. We were nominated for a B. Iden Payne Awaard for Best Production of a Drama and Ken Bradley for Best Actor (Critics Choice Table.) Shortly after AFGM Cathy Grant (later Cathy BRADLEY) joined The Company as Managing Producer. Black Comedy, our next success, brought back big audiences to the Dougherty Arts Center after major building rennovations and established our new relationship with The Stafford Opera House in Columbus Texas.. Next was a season of shows at Hyde Park Theatre: ORPHANS, SEARCH & DESTROY, ROPE and Eric Bogosian's TALK RADIO brought such notoriety that the playwirght himself came to see the show!!. Each of these shows was nominated (B. Iden Payne and Austin Critics Table Awards) in at least one category with Search And Destroy garnering five nominations and TALK RADIO catching eight noms! Then in 2003 Boomtown recieved an additional two nominations. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| J.Damian Gillen, Artistic Director, 2004-present | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| So how did we fare with each of our 23 nominations over the course of these shows? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Close but only one cigar: Ann Hulsman winning Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for SEARCH & DESTROY. (Damian did receive the ever-elusive an award for Best Actor but not for a Company production) The point is that they were each recognized for the top rate production that they were. Besides none of us get into this for the rewards or reviews anyway, right?...right? In November of 96 we produced, Lone Star , bringing our successful brand of comedy back to the Dougherty Arts Center. And also in 97 our critically acclaimed staging of Eric Bogosian's SubUrbia at The Vortex/Planet theatre in Austin. In addition to our Austin productions we have produced many "on-the-road" touring shows in association with our dear friends in The Onstage Theatre Co. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| THE COMPANY is a non-equity theatre production company dedicated to the work. We do not get paid union scale, as in an equity production. In addition to our "Plays from movies" concept we also present new, fresh, cutting edge material (Orphans & Suburbia) in a fringe theatre format, where the play is still unproven. What we have with The Company is a critically-acclaimed and audience-tested production company for many years of professional; We have talented actors and technical staff dedicating their time, talents and efforts to a high quality production that more than matches an equity house. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| What is next for The Company!?! In 2004 Ken & Cathy Bradley produced with Damian Gillen for one last time before turning their goals in other directions. Ken & Cathy are looking toward a bright future (including an independent film that went to CANNES in 2005) As 2004 rolled around, Damian continued to produce quality theatrical productions as THE COMPANY, TOURING PRODUCTIONS with his one-man show & smash hit (3 years running) BAH HUMBUG : and also Shakespeares MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (which had sold out nearly every night of it 4 week run) a freely adapted version of Shakespeares romantic comedy. Then to Woody Allen's PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM and Andrew Bergman's classic SOCIAL SECURITY in 2005! Now,The Company has turned its focus to producing inspiring TOURING PRODUCTIONS! |
