THE COMPANIE OF DANSERS

Dancing figures

The Companie of Dansers is England’s leading early dance group specialising in performing the theatrical dances of 17th and 18th century Europe drawn from the extensive repertoire of surviving French and English dance notations.  These dances range from the humorous Comedia del’Arte representations of Harlequin, Clowns and Turks, through the simple delights of the pastoral idyll to the elegant sophistication of the ballet de cour.

This group of highly talented dancers offer lively and entertaining performances, and working closely with the musicians of Trabocchetti they present creative combinations of dance and music to bring their work more vividly to life for modern audiences.

The Companie has performed at major concert venues in England and has toured extensively through Europe.

Artistic director:  Madeleine Inglehearn

Musical director:  Jean McCreery

Madeleine Inglehearn trained in ballet and studied early dance under Wendy Hilton, following which she began her own research work and studied the dance treatises and notations of the renaissance and baroque, specialising in recreating the dances of 17th and 18th century French and English dancing masters.  She is Professor of dance history at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London and Chairman of the European Association of Dance HistoriansShe founded and is artistic director of The Companie of Dansers, and has often been called upon to advise on period movement and to choreograph for the theatre, television and film, as well as giving classes and workshops for musicians, actors and dancers.  Madeleine is also a member of the Conseil International de la Danse.

TRABOCCHETTI

Jean McCreery studied the recorder at the Royal College of Music and at the Guildhall School of Music with Philip Pickett.  Whilst at the Guildhall she started baroque dance classes with Madeleine Inglehearn and has continued to have an active interest in dance.  She formed the baroque ensemble Trabocchetti on leaving Guildhall in order to perform baroque chamber music on authentic instruments.  It seemed a natural progression for the group to play for dancers, given Jean’s link with both music and dance, and Trabocchetti is now committed to creating informed performances with The Companie of dansers.
