Geography's 5 Themes Project                   Name:_______________________

Now that we have explored the 5 Themes in various ways in class, it's your turn to show that you understand them as an individual!  This project will show me just that.  You will 1) choose a country in Europe (unless you choose The U.S. or Japan), from a hat, and 2) show and explain how each of the five themes helps to define that area.  This project will count as your test grade on our 5 themes unit so do your best and work hard on it.

Conditions:

1.      You must work alone, no partners, so do not ask.

2.      You are to find and explain items that show each theme in your area of study (for example: for Human-Environment Interactions, I could show a photo of how oil spills affect Puerto Rico and then explain it briefly, then I could add a picture of  bottles and litter along the streets and again explain how that is related to the theme.)

3.      Your project may be in the form of a poster, organized collage, small book, travel brochure, Power Point Presentation, or a model of a prominent landmark in the country you choose.  Your explanations must be typed, in the form of a paragraph, and either pasted or attached to your projects.  If you choose to do a Poster or a book, you must include a paragraph explanation for each theme.  If you choose to do a landmark, you should have a one page report explaining the 5 themes and how they are displayed.

4.      You may trace items, print them off a home or school computer source, check the Internet, or use personal photos (with your parents permission!!), DO NOT cut and paste information on your project that is not your own work.  You may use books and other sources to get information, then write it in your own words.

5.      Projects are due on Monday, November 16th.  Late projects will not be accepted, I will not accept any excuses so do not try to give any to me.  You will be given some time in class, but you should NOT wait to the last minute to complete this assignment.  If you need help, stay after school with me, but please let me know ahead of time.  Also, look at the examples in class to give you an idea of what I want on your written pieces and projects.

6.     For Location and Place the two items that you show for each must be one of the two components.  (Example: you should have an item that shows relative location and an item should show absolute location.  For Place one example should be Human Characteristics and the other Physical Characteristics.

Planning Sheet: You need to show at least two items for each of the following:

Location, Region, Place, Human/Environment Interaction, and Movement.  Remember that Location includes Absolute Location and Relative Location.  Place includes Human features and Physical Features.
