Part Two of a two-part series on unsolved homicides from the past 30 years. The first part ran in yesterday's Union Leader. -----

By CISSY TAYLOR Union Leader Staff Daniel O'Connell was 28 years old when he was murdered and his body dumped in a sand pit off Route 106 in Loudon. An unidentified couple trying out their new camper found the remains of the Massachusetts man on Oct. 31, 1971. His is the first identified person on a list of 100 unsolved homicides in New Hampshire, deaths that occurred since 1970 in which there has been no resolution. The first person on the list is a woman whose skeletal remains were found in the woods in Bedford earlier that same month. She has never been identified. In the offices of prosecutors and investigators across the state, there are men and women who hope to solve all of these violent deaths. New Hampshire has a homicide clearance rate of about 80 percent, but it is the unresolved that plague those in law enforcement. Often investigators have been able to identify a suspect but were unable to pull together enough evidence to prove who the killer is. In other cases, including the serial killings in the Connecticut River Valley in the 1980s, suspects have come and gone, but no one person has ever been singled out as the murderer. Manchester Police Capt. Richard O'Leary said that information on any homicide, no matter how old, is always welcomed. "Nobody should have to die like that and have a case just linger and linger and remain unsolved," he said. "The word closure is always popular today, but if you can close these out, it brings comfort to the family. Even though it won't bring their loved one back, it can allow them to go on with their lives." O'Connell's story is contained in a three-ring binder at State Police headquarters. The information is detailed, such as it is, but scarce. He lived in Lowell, Mass., with his parents, who had reported him missing on Oct. 25. He was last seen on Oct. 24. He worked at a Lowell taxi company and hung out at a local bar. In those days, there was no office of the chief medical examiner, no use of advanced forensics. Instead, a medical referee -- often a political appointee with no medical background -- checked out O'Connell's body. The file says he was unable to determine the cause of death. Now, 29 years later, hardly anyone in New Hampshire remembers Daniel O'Connell's name. But, his case remains open, as do all of the unsolved homicides. There is no statute of limitations on murder. O'Leary said it was his hope that publicity about the cases might bring some information that would help resolve them. "Hopefully, it will rekindle some memories of people," he said. "Time sometimes works to our favor." Equally important, he said, is that the families, the survivors, the general public and especially the killers know that police will not give up. "It's important for people to know that these cases are not forgotten," he said. "They might not be worked on every day, but certainly, they are not forgotten. "Each death is very important to us. The suspect should know that we have patience and we don't forget or give up." Compiling and publishing a list, he said, could be the trigger that leads investigators to the killer. "Every lead this might generate will be followed up," O'Leary said. "Those leads will become a priority no matter how old the case is." ---- Unsolved deaths in new Hampshire since 1970 The following is a list of homicides across New Hampshire since 1970 that remain unsolved. The list does not contain the names of victims of hit-and-run automobile accidents, which are technically considered homicides. The information was compiled by The Union Leader using the resources of the New Hampshire State Police, the Attorney General's Office, and the local police departments in Manchester, Concord, Dover, Nashua and Portsmouth, the Manchester Fire Department, and through the newspaper's own archives. -----
