Born May 18, 1912. Pierino Como was the seventh son of a seventh son. He apprenticed as a barber at the age of twelve, then took over a established business at the age of 14. Perry auditioned for a Cleveland bandleader, Freddie Carlone, in 1933, the same year he married his wife. Carlone's thirteen piece band was never recorded. In 1935, Perry joined Ted Weems' Orchestra and recorded for the DECCA label. In 1942, when Weems was enlisted, Perry decided to go back to his hometown of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania and return to being a barber. But, he soon returned to singing. His first recording for RCA-Victor was "Goodbye Sue" on December 1, 1943. It was the first of many hit singles and, later, hit albums.

PERRY COMO'S LP ALBUMS:

There have been other great Como recordings on the RCA Camden label (these are mostly compilations of earlier recordings issued on 78's). Readers Digest issued a great set that is definitely worth having, if you can find it! In my opinion, Como had the best orchestra backings, especially on the albums produced by Hugo & Luigi ("Sing To Me Mr C", "By Request", "The Best Of Irving Berlin's Songs From Mr. President", and "The Songs I Love").
A great CD box set to invest in would be "Perry Como-- Yesterday & Today-- A Celebration In Song". Contained on this 3-CD set are a number of songs previously unissued (such as a great version of "Unchained Melody" and the full version of "You Are Never Far Away From Me").
