I wanted to let people know that I will be teaching a class in radio documentary production this summer as part of the AU School of Communication Summer Institute. It will be on Monday and Wednesday evenings from July 2-August 8.

This is the website with more information http://soc.american.edu/content.cfm?id=56 and this is the course brochure http://soc.american.edu/docs/filmdigimedia_2007.pdf

You can go to the website below to hear documentaries I have produced. My next program (3 hours on Shakespeare In American Life, produced with the Folger Shakespeare Library) will air around the country starting next week and on WAMU locally on May 8th, 15th and 22nd at 10 PM.

Meet & Greet For Mai Abdul Rahman

Posted by: "kathysmithindc" [email protected]   kathysmithindc

Thu Mar 29, 2007 7:27 am (PST)

A group of parents are organizing a meet and greet for Mai Abdul
Rahman to discuss her ideas of small class size and how it will impact
the learning and teaching environments in DC Schools and classrooms.
Other topics about reforming DCPS will be discussed including her
proposal to conduct a QA audit of all DCPS business systems to align,
enhance and improve administrative and business functions.

When: Monday April 2nd at 8:00 pm
Where at the the home of Alejandra and Paul Norse
1404 Crittenden

For your convenience I have attached below, in Mai's own words some of
her campaign platform plans and ideas.

*******************
Our public education crisis is the most urgent problem facing our
city. It impacts every citizen and business. Our school system is
faltering and mired with inefficiency, poor judgment, incompetence,
cronyism and corruption. Many DCPS students are graduating unprepared
for the workforce and unskilled.
As a parent of 4 children, educator, community activist, and
management expert- I know the issues facing our children and I am
determined to resolve them.

I will address incompetence, waste, and poor management. I will
eliminate redundancy and inefficiencies by requiring a system wide QM
audit to examine and evaluate all functions and departments within DCPS.

I am committed to resolving our school failures by promoting strong
educational leadership, high expectations for students, positive and
safe learning environments and effective partnerships with parents and
community.

Class size is the most important factor in achieving optimum learning
and teaching. I will mandate class size limits specifically for Wards
3&4 elementary and middle schools. Small class sizes will improve
class instruction, enhance teacher`s ability to detect and address
specific student needs and produce measurable successes for teachers
and students.

I believe that quality education is an inalienable right that must be
met for all District children. I will insure that efforts to
integrate/include special Ed students in general Ed classrooms are
properly administered by qualified teachers and aids.

As a parent, I understand that fundamental change is necessary to
improve our schools. Our children have a right to a high-quality
public education. This is not a privilege or an ideal but rather a
prerogative that they deserve regardless of gender, color, social
standing or learning capacity or learning style.

I realize that successful school reform requires in depth analysis,
long term strategies, clear benchmarks, and measurable outcomes and
above all parental, teacher and community input.

We are also looking for a reliable handyman/woman to do odd jobs around
the house. WE currently use Case Services, very expensive, and not
always top notch.
