Meet Mai, a DC Board of Ed candidate

Posted by: "kindellhoward" [email protected]   kindellhoward

Sat Mar 24, 2007 7:02 am (PST)

I have known Mai Abdul Rahman as a PTA Co President, vice President
and member of the Grants committee at Deal Jr. High School- for more
than 4 years. She helped in organizing PTA luncheons for our
teachers, helped fund basketball hoops and courts for Deal students,
set up the school soccer program and schedule and supported
countless of DC children to attend Summer programs free of charge.
In addition, she produced and hosted "spotlightoneducation" a
television program that brought parents, teachers, administrators
and city officials to discuss issues of concern and the services
available for their children within DCPS and DC agencies. Above all
she helped organize efforts to educate teachers and DC families on
hunger and was instrumental in implementing the Universal Breakfast
program for all DC public school children.
Mai has tremendous management experience as a published QA expert
and was a recent United Nations consultant on civic engagement.
Mai has spent years giving our community and has demonstrated her
interest in making a difference. She is dedicated, honest and above
all knowledgeable about the issues that many of our children face.
She is a mother of 4 children, teacher, and has a MA in Education.
For your convenience I have attached below, in Mai's own words some
of her campaign platform plans and ideas.

************ *******
Our public education crisis is the most urgent problem facing our
city. It impacts every citizen and business. Our school system is
faltering and mired with inefficiency, poor judgment, incompetence,
cronyism and corruption. Many DCPS students are graduating
unprepared for the workforce and unskilled.

As a parent of 4 children, educator, community activist, and
management expert I know the issues facing our children and I am
determined to resolve them.

I will address incompetence, waste, and poor management. I will
eliminate redundancy and inefficiencies by requiring a system wide
QM audit to examine and evaluate all functions and departments
within DCPS.

I am committed to resolving our school failures by promoting strong
educational leadership, high expectations for students, positive and
safe learning environments and effective partnerships with parents
and community.

Class size is the most important factor in achieving optimum
learning and teaching. I will mandate class size limits specifically
for Wards 3&4 elementary and middle schools. Small class sizes will
improve class instruction, enhance teacher`s ability to detect and
address specific student needs and produce measurable successes for
teachers and students.

I believe that quality education is an inalienable right that must
be met for all District children. I will insure that efforts to
integrate/include special Ed students in general Ed classrooms are
properly administered by qualified teachers and aids.

REMINDER: CIRCULATOR BUS EXTENSION IN GEORGETOWN TO LAUNCH MONDAY

Smithsonian/National Gallery of Art Route Resumes Daily Schedule on
March 26

As previously announced, the DC Circulator bus will extend its
East/West route to take on the Georgetown Metro Connection "Blue Bus"
Foggy Bottom line beginning Monday, March 26, 2007,

The Georgetown Metro Connection, fondly referred to as the "Blue Bus,"
was launched five years ago by the Georgetown Business Improvement
District (BID), to link Georgetown to the three closest Metro stations
- Foggy Bottom, Dupont Circle and Roslyn. It was a precursor to the DC
Circulator bus, demonstrating the high demand for efficient
neighborhood-based surface transportation.

In an effort to provide the best and most efficient means of bus
transportation in and around Georgetown, the District Department of
Transportation - in partnership with the Georgetown BID - will conduct
a six month trial to extend the Circulator's route.

The demonstration project will run through September 30, 2007 and if
deemed successful will become an ongoing route. The Georgetown BID
will continue to run its Blue Bus on the long-established Roslyn to
Dupont Circle route.

Also, please note that the Circulator's Smithsonian/National Gallery
of Art Route will resume running seven days a week on Monday March 26
as part of its seasonal change. The Smithsonian/National Gallery of
Art Loop will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

For more information and for new route details please visit:

While out walking our dog this morning, my husband found a set of keys
on 44th Street, between Albemarle and Butterworth streets NW. The
keychain, anchored by a heavy bottle opener with an American
University logo, includes two keys, a tiny red flashlight, a plastic
Metro farecard holder (with two wet farecards) and a heavy chain. If
this is yours, please contact Kathleen Stanley at KJStanley@aol.com.
