wanted: apartment or house to rent

Two young researchers at RAND (where I work) are looking for an
apartment or house to rent in Tenleytown/AU Park. They need two
bedrooms; on-site laundry facilities or an in-house washer/dryer would
be a HUGE plus. They can afford no more than $2200 including utilities.
If you have space to rent, or know of such space, please contact Phil
Kehres at pkehres@rand.org. I can vouch for these two young men. They
are responsible, helpful, and generally nice guys.

Thanks. Shari

Result of hearing regarding false accusation of cell phone use while

Greetings neighbors, For those of you who may remember the notice I
put in this forum last April regarding aggressive ticketing in the
neighborhood, I wanted to let you all know that I have now had my day
in court and that the verdict was "Guilty as charged". The judge
completely discounted my phone bill showing that I was not making a
call at that time. She said I didn't have to be talking. I could have
been listening to messages, music or whatever. It also could have
been someone else's phone. It came down to "He said, she said" though
in this case it was "She said, she said" and the judge believed the
officer and not me. In order to appeal the decision (which I plan to
do) I have to pay the $100 fine plus $60 in fees which I will get
back if I win the appeal. The decision on the appeal can take up to
two years. If the person who decides on the appeal is anything like
the judge I had today, I guess I'll lose again. But for me it's the
principle of the thing.

I am a teacher of social studies to second language learners (ie
immigrants) in Arlington. I teach history, geography and government.
I teach kids who come from countries where government corruption is
the norm and where the police are often as guilty of breaking the law
as the criminals. I try to get my students to understand that in this
country, no one is above the law and that if you obey the law, you
should be ok. I especially try to convince them that it is wrong to
lie. They think I'm very naive and they tell me that everyone lies.
They don't believe me when I say that I don't lie. That is why it is
so upsetting for me to be accused of lying by a police officer.

But I am also upset and concerned to know that this police officer
will not consider for one second that she could have made a mistake.
I have learned a valuable lesson from this experience and I guess
that it's about time that I lost some of my naivete. The police are
not always right and there are probably more people out there who lie
than those who don't. I hope for everyone's sake that the officer
truly believes that I was on the phone and that she is not lying. I
wonder how many other innocent people she has ticketed and then sworn
in court that the ticketed person was lying. In conclusion, I now
have a completely different perspective with regard to the police and
I'm even starting to wonder....Maybe OJ WAS innocent!

Suspicious "Comcast" Technician

Posted by: "andrewsherry88" [email protected]   andrewsherry88

Tue Jul 29, 2008 6:50 pm (PDT)

This afternoon, a man identifying himself as being from Comcast
knocked on our door in AU Park, a few minutes after my wife arrived
home, and said he was here to collect the cable box. He appeared to
have a service order in my name. My wife refused to open the door
because he was dressed in a t-shirt and jeans rather than a uniform,
was driving a older green SUV with ladders on top (maybe a Nissan
Pajero) rather than a Comcast truck, and we did not have a service
appointment. He said he would have to cut the cable if she didn't open
and she said fine (he didn't).

I contacted Comcast and they said they confirmed they had no
service appointment scheduled for our address today. Has anyone heard
of any similar incidents? Somehow, I don't think this is just another
example of abysmal cable service.
