Thai eggplants

I planted an eggplant that had no label and it turns out to be a Thai eggplant - green striped
and about the size of golf balls. According to what I have read, it is best in curries, etc. There
are about 5-6 ripe with many to come. If anyone wants them, please email me and pick them
up.

LOOKING FOR A HOME --Two hard-working women, Yale graduates, one starting
Georgetown law, one on the way to medical school (at NIH this year), and Lulu, a
sweet yellow lab, are looking for a home-apartment or part of house to
share-in a safe neighborhood close to the Red Line, and want to move in around August
1, year rental. We're not rich, but we're very neat, well-behaved and
charming company-and Lulu can high-five with two paws. Do you have a place for
us?

Our teak dining tabletop (and two matching leaves) is in need of refinishing. We would welcome recommendations based on the experience of others of our neighbors who have had such wood furniture professionally refinished.

DPW KICKS OFF "NOT IN OUR DC!" LITTER/GRAFFITI PREVENTION CAMPAIGN

Unveils New Documentary Highlighting City and Citizens Efforts to Keep
DC Clean

The DC Department of Public Works launched a unique litter and graffiti
prevention program-Not in OUR DC! Pledge to Keep the Capital Clean-at
two town hall meetings on Wednesday, July 9 (for youth) and Thursday,
July 10, 2008 (for adults) from 9 am until 11:30 am. The events were
held at WUSA 9, 4100 Wisconsin Avenue, NW.

Town hall participants also previewed a new documentary produced for DPW
by Connect with Kids, which produces the Emmy Award-winning Connect with
Kids television series. The 30-minute video illustrates the impact of
litter and graffiti on Washington, DC and features residents who have
taken unique approaches to help improve their neighborhoods. The
documentary will premiere Saturday, July 12, on Channel 9 at noon.

At the events, nearly 150 youth, ages 13 to 19, and more than 130 adults
worked in teams developing ideas and initiatives to help keep their
communities litter and graffiti free. Examples of these initiatives
included songs, poems and a musical jingle. The groups received a tool
kit filled with information, activities and ideas to help school and
community groups to implement litter and graffiti prevention programs.

"I've always believed that a clean city is a partnership between
government and residents," said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr.
"Litter and graffiti are too prevalent in DC and around the country. By
helping to change the mindset of residents-especially while they're
young-we can help achieve lasting solutions."

Howland said the goal of the town hall events is for participants to
leave with an action plan that will help change the way members of their
communities, schools, and organizations think and act with regard to
litter and graffiti. DPW also will follow up with each of the teams to
help them implement action plans, he added.

Not in OUR DC! Pledge to Keep the Capital Clean is designed to change
behavior in an effort to reduce litter and graffiti. Additional
components of the campaign include litter and graffiti prevention
television commercials, and a Website that feature short videos and
resource guides in English and Spanish.

Receive more information about the campaign, download resource tools to
help create a plan for your neighborhood, and view the documentary by

bicyles and sidewalks

Posted by: "acsullivan2001" [email protected]   acsullivan2001

Tue Jul 15, 2008 9:55 am (PDT)

At last night's ANC 3E meeting, a woman described how she was
recently hit by a motor vehicle while riding her bicycle to work.
While discussing possible ways to increase bike safety, the question
came up about whether or not it is legal in the District of Columbia
to ride a bicyle on public sidewalks.

I called DDOT today and asked to speak to the person in charge of
the bicycle program. A man named "Jim" answered the phone and told
me that it is, indeed, legal to ride a bicyle on public sidewalks in
the District of Columbia, EXCEPT for those sidewalks located in the
Central Business District. Naturally, bicyclists need to yield to
pedestrians on the sidewalk, and bicyclists may ride in the
crosswalks and adhere to the rules and regulations of pedestrians.

Although Jim said that the information is somewhere on the DDOT
webpage, I had trouble locating it. He also said the boundaries of
the Central Business District are described there. I hope that
someone with more DDOT webpage navigational skills than I have can
help locate this information in writing.

In the meantime, I suggested to Jim that an informational campaign
about this regulation begin with the various police districts. The
woman at the ANC 3E meeting (I'm sorry that I didn't catch her name)
had mentioned that the police she had discussed this with said it
was illegal to ride on sidewalks anywhere in DC, which is incorrect.

Its been a hard week for Homeward Trails and we are desperately in need
of foster homes. We need fosters for:
1 A mom and her litter of 4 tiny kittens
2. An 18 month old cat with the sweetest personality who was severely
abused and needs some follow up medical care which we will provide.
3. A one year old Russian Blue
4. Two single kittens (one foster each since we don't mix litters until
they are fully vaccinated). No risk to vaccinated cats only to each
other.
5. A pair of healthy happy 10 week old kittens
