I'd like to politely disagree with the
person who said it's worthless to ask
the DC Consumer Protection bureau (or whatever is its name) to handle a
dispute. I had a problem with a heating repair company based in
Bethesda. The
company had not repaired my furnace - and in fact - left me for days
without a
response about fixing it, even though it was November and beginning to
get
very cold.
Though a year had gone by with us fighting over the bill, I was mad
enough
to write to the Maryland Dept. of Consumer Protection and they sent my
complaint on to DC - since I live in Washington. Within a month or two,
the company
stopped its stalling and stopped trying to bill me for not doing any
work.
It also agreed to send me an invoice noting a ZERO balance, (which they
had
refused to do earlier).
I also want to point out that my letter from the DC government stating
that
I did NOT owe the company anything came shortly after the transition
into the
Fenty Administration. So rather than sit in a bureaucratic heap and get
lost in the transition, my complaint was handled rather quickly, which
I was
both surprised and happy to see.
All the best,
lisa
