Examiner - How I stopped the Paper

Posted by: "Jan Phalen" [email protected]

I sent the message below to Communit-E on May 3, but am repeating it because
of the recent inquiries. Also, Michael Phelps, Owner of the Examiner, sent
me an e-mail indicating he had read my message and would stop the paper. I
then e-mailed him, asking if he had read the many other complaints from our
readers and he said he would take care of it of canceling the paper fir the
other readers who had complained in the newsletter.. Here is his address:

Good Luck!

Subject: Re:Examiner - How I stopped the paper.

It took me three-four weeks to get the Examiner stopped. Below are the
names and numbers of the people I called daily, except Sunday.

Becky Brown, Examiner, Manager, Circulation: 800-531-1223. Useless. I
stopped calling after the first few days.

Teresa Brown, assistant to Tom DeSimone, Regional VP, Circulation:
703-738-0754; very helpful after the first few calls.

Richard, NewsOne Distributors in Greenbelt: 240-473-6838. He got my zip
code incorrect, which took a few days to rectify. He made a number of
promises but did not follow thru until I left messages with his boss .....

Mike Hughes, Director, NewsOne: 240-473-6838, ext 311. Never talked to him
but we played phone tag a lot with full messages. He was responsive to my
messages. He did tell me that he could not read Richard's note to him about
my calls. I told him about Richard not copying my zip code correctly and
suggested that he double check anything that Richard may be sending to the
supervisor who supervises the people who actually throw the paper on our
property or street. That seemed to do it.

Also Richard told me at the last call that he would tell the supervisor to
tell the delivery person to not just stop delivery, but to pick up the paper
that was delivered the day before. I am assuming that the driver finally
found the correct house, because that paper was picked up and no other paper
has been delivered.

I left very strong messages after the first few days. My next step was
going to be my delivering to Michael Phelps home (front yard) all the
Examiners he had thrown on my yard. I still have a pile if anyone wants
them.

Suggestions -- Barking Dogs

Posted by: "kathysmithindc" [email protected]   kathysmithindc

From: Robert Hyman <robertehyman@gmail.com>

Has anyone tried a muzzle on dogs that bark for hours on end? There
are also "bark collars" that administer a small shock that trains the
dog to not bark. I have used this on my dog and it took a week and the
problem was cured!

My visit to Camp Brown  -- Kathy Smith

My visit to Camp Brown -- Kathy Smith

Last week I had the opportunity to tour Camp Brown. It was gorgeous --
far away
from the grubby mean streets these kids come from. It sits on what
looks like a bay
but is a very wide part of the lower Potomac River. Cool breezes were
washing over
the land and around the little cabins. Each cabin sleeps four.

Camp Brown has lots of trees, wildflowers, a swimming pool, a fishing
pier, a few boats,
and even a Bald Eagles nest.

What it needs is poor kids from the city. They can only get there if
we help the camp
financially, through donations. By our "scholarships" to the camp, we
send these kids
to a world and activities (they are kept constantly busy) that are
otherwise unknown
to them. Some of them never get out of their neighborhoods and don't
get three
meals a day.

Camp Brown shows them that there is a beautiful world out there that
is full of hope
and promise -- something these kids desperately need to know.

Please give generously and make out your check to:
6D MPD CAC.

This stands for Sixth District Metropolitan Police Department
Citizen's Advisory
Council, a 501(c) (3) partner to Camp Brown.
Your donations are tax deductable.

Send your checks to:
George W. Fenderson
202 Varnum Street, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20011-7321

I've already sent mine and feel good about it.

Thank you.
Kathy Smith

Street Light Repair Number

Posted by: "kathysmithindc" [email protected]   kathysmithindc

Thu May 24, 2007 7:16 am (PST)

From: Samantha Nolan <nolantutor@yahoo.com>

For years, there was a specific number (269-0855) one could call to
report a street light out. It was available 24 hours a day. That
number is no longer operable. If there is a street light out on your
block, please call 727-1000 and report the address of the house
closest to the pole, and the number on the yellow strip on the pole
that has been added recently. All light poles in DC should have a
yellow strip with numbers soon, if the strip is not there already.

Please remember that Dark Places Encourage Crime; Light Places
Discourage Crime. If the light is out, you are more likely to have
theft from autos, burglaries and robberies in that area. Please get
involved in our crime fighting efforts by reporting all lights out on
the street and in the alleys. Thanks for your help. Samantha Nolan

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good retirement planner? I
presume such a planner would be an accountant.

Theft from Auto: How to avoid it

Posted by: "kathysmithindc" [email protected]   kathysmithindc

From: MPD-2d@yahoogroups.com On Behalf Of Stephanie Faul

There have been several "theft from auto" reports in the past few
crime reports. Unlike most of the other thefts, this is a problem that
is easily preventable.

How? Do not leave ANYTHING in your car that want to see again.

I used to work for the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety and one of
the things we stressed repeatedly is that a motor vehicle is not a
secure space. Either take your items with you when you leave the car
or put the them in your house before you go out.

NEVER assume that your car cannot be broken into. Yes, it's clumsy
hauling your cello into the bank, but believe me, it's worth the effort.

Stephanie Faul

P.S.: The worst example of this I ever saw was a woman at an office
who decided to put her jewelery under the spare tire in her trunk. You
can guess the rest.

A Lost Kitty

From: stargazerlilyfan <stargazerlilyfan@yahoo.com>

My elderly and ailing cat Simon (indoor only) escaped into the
neighborhood on Monday night I believe (near Chesapeake St. and 43rd
Pl.). He is a sweet grey and white cat with green eyes. He is very
thin and has lost quite a bit of fur on his back and legs due to
illness.

If you find him, please contact me at 202-253-5901 or
stargazerlilyfan@yahoo.com.

Thanks for your help.

Street Light and Other Service Requests

From: NateRH86@aol.com

If you don't feel like trying to get someone on the phone, you can
also make requests for city services (potholes, streetlights, dead
animals, public space mowing, etc.) by going to dc.gov and clicking on
the "online services" bar, then selecting "request city services."

Once you create an account, you can easily log on to fill out as many
requests as you want. You will be given a tracking number for each and
can check back at anytime to see how the request progresses (projected
inspection and completion dates, as well as any other information). It
works pretty well.
