Scam Alert

Hi, I recall reading on COMMUNIT-E about scams like the one I seemed to
have run into yesterday at CVS on Wisc Av...a woman came up and made small
talk but quickly got to the point that she'd locked her keys in her car
and wanted a ride home to get a spare set. Said she was a lawyer at
Covington & Burling, and "oh goodness me, I am just completely embarrassed
and would you do a blind-faith favor etc" . I refused and explained
there'd been some scams in the neighborhood and was hilarious how quickly
she dropped the act and cussed me out. Description: small attractive woman
around 50, very slight, African-American, short hair pulled back tightly,
dressed in high-end sweat suit, brown baseball cap with white Adidas logo,
carrying a small jute tote bag.

For all of us – and pass it on to your friends across the country:

Crutchfield, a Charlottesville-based consumer electronics retailer (you probably get their
catalogues), has partnered with the Arlington-based Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)
to create an online tool designed to help consumers locate electronics recycling facilities
across the U.S. The tools allows users who visit www.crutchfield.com/recycling
<http://www.crutchfield.com/recycling>
to input their zip code and get a list of local or regional electronics recycling centers. The
service is powered by the CEA's myGreenElectronics database. My query shows that we have
more regional resources than I thought!

Many are in the 'burbs, but most of us venture out with some regularity, and it's just a matter
of trip planning...

Examiner delivery continues....how to stop?

I followed the advice from an earlier posting and although it took two
attempts, the Examiner is no longer being delivered to my home. Phone
(410) 878-6100 to request that delivery cease. Good luck!!

That sounds like the same woman who has been doing it for years.
She's a nasty piece of work when you say no.

The Mayor's office replied to my email and said that I should call 311
each and every time I see that the metro entrance near Best Buy is a
mess as a result of loitering. If we all make phone calls perhaps it
will help eliminate the problem. This a.m. there were two grocery
carts filled with junk and clothing just left there. I sincerely hope
that folks are not "donating" to the homeless who hang around there.
This just encourages them to stay and creates an unsafe and unhealthy
environment. I donate money and clothing, etc. to charities and
shelters, but refuse to encourage panhandling and loitering on the
streets.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: APRIL 30, 2007

MEDIA CONTACT: ERIK LINDEN 202-671-2004

DDOT TO HOST CITYWIDE PEDESTRIAN MASTER PLAN PUBLIC MEETING

(Washington, DC) The District of Columbia Department of Transportation
(DDOT) is scheduled to host a citywide public meeting as part of the DC
Pedestrian Master Plan. The meeting - the first of its kind in District
of Columbia history - will take place on Thursday, May 3, 2007 from 7
p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Columbia Heights Recreational Center, 1480
Girard St. NW.

The plan is part of a process that will examine all aspects of the
District's pedestrian environment - from policies to design guidelines
to specific safety improvements in some of the city's highest pedestrian
crash corridors. The plan is due to be completed in October 2007 and
currently DDOT and its partners are seeking public input through a
variety of means including focus groups, an online survey and this
citywide meeting.

Last year, 17 pedestrians were struck and killed in the District. In
2005, 16 pedestrians were struck and killed. So far this year, 10
pedestrians have been struck and killed in the District.

The citywide public meeting will introduce the public to the plan, its
purpose and scope. Participants will learn about the public
participation strategies being used throughout the planning process and
will hear the results of the citywide online survey. Participants will
have the opportunity to provide feedback on the priority corridors in
the District that are being proposed for more detailed analysis to
improve pedestrian safety and access.

The agenda for the public meeting will include topics such as:

* Citywide pedestrian issues and initiatives

* Purpose and goals of the Pedestrian Master Plan

* Project scope

* Policy and facility improvements

* Public involvement strategies

* Results of the citywide online survey

* Identification of priority pedestrian areas for detailed
analysis

* Map review and comment on priority pedestrian areas

The venue is pedestrian and bike friendly and is conveniently located
three blocks from the Columbia Heights Metro station and between major
bus lines on 14th and 16th Streets. Motor vehicle parking is limited.
