When the Mayor's call center doesn't work

Posted by: "Richard L. Paul" [email protected]   rlpaulproductions

The traffic light at Ct. & Morrison has been blinking for 10 days. I have called the Mayor's call center twice (the case number is 14117941). This morning I see it's still blinking.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what to do after calling the call center twice with no action?

I know that in the Marion Barry Days, one would call the agency in question. But during the Williams Years they discouraged doing that. The mayor always said that if you did that, there would be no accountability. The Call Center job number was the magic ticket to accountability because it could be tracked.

Now we're in the Fenty Era. So I don't know what the "rule" is in a situation like this.

I know there are plenty of people on this list who see the mayor on a regular basis. Can someone ask him what a citizen is supposed to do in a situation of this kind?

Thanks.
Richard Paul

The light is a pedestrian activated light and my understanding from
DDOT is that the new light once it is fully operational (within the
next few days) will only be activated by pedestrians however, it
will be synchronized with both the lights at McKinley Street as well
as Livingston Street.

In addition to appealing assessments, I suggest that those concerned with their rising assessments also contact the Council, or at least Mary Cheh. The Council granted some relief a few years back with the 10% cap but 10% is still a hefty hike when it comes every year AND assessments are moving well beyond that. As someone pointed out, property values are going down but the assessments keep rising. Even if assessments were frozen, many of us would still have a 10% increase for many years simply to catch up. I think we need to lobby our Council Member on this.

A little history. As with any organization, when computer upgrades
come along, eventually upgrades happen and getting rid of old
unuseable equipment is difficult if you want to be conscious of the
environment. IONA Senior Services was one of those organization, we
had accumulated for the past 10 years. The equipment was absolute
unuseable, old and inoperable, but we didn't want to dump them in a
land fill. Yesterday we recycled.

On the Tenleytown list server there was a young man that left a
message about his willingness to recycle old computer equipment. It
is a FREE program, he told us, except for a $6 charge for computer
monitors (because of the lead and leaded glass in each unit) they took
all equipment.

To date he had recycled over 25,500 pounds of hardware. We even had 5
huge boxes of electrical, USB, wire, etc to get rid of. He works with
a ZERO LANDFILL program!

Yesterday, we took a very substatial amount of equipment that had
accumulated for the past 10 years. Five volunteers from a service
organization at American University came and helped me. Made an all
day job into a very quick job. Our bus was full of equipment.

I met Nick Morgan for the first time yesterday, a young high-school
student, full of energy. His enthusams and willingness to help was
truly incredible. I jokingly asked if he made any money out of this,
he quickly said yes. Then I met his mother, she told me that he took
every penny of that money and donated it to a charity.

This young man, last year, moved 25,000 pounds, that's 12 ton's of
old/unusable equipment from his front porch, shrink wrapped in large
groups and prepared it for shipment to Colorado and then took the
little bit of money he received, turn around and gave it to charity.

There is actually hope for this country with fine young men like that.
A young man that has a set of parents should be very proud of.

So if you have any old electronic equiment (the rest is his comment)
(they can not take TV's) please consider leaving on their front porch
at 3630 Everett Street, NW, DC 20008 (a small one-way street off the
intersection of Nebraska Avenue & Reno Road) at any time, day or
night, 24/7. No advanced notice needed. THANK YOU FOR RECYCLING! He
also said: Questions? Contact Nick Morgan at nmorgan@maret. org

Nick, thank you again.

I got rid of the Examiner after a couple of calls. But how the heck do
you get the NYTimes to suspend delivery? I do it on line and on the
phone and get confirmation by e-mail. When we get home, there is that
blue-encased newspaper.

Graffiti on Ft. Reno Park fence

Does anyone have any suggestions for getting the graffiti on the Ft.
Reno Park fence removed? I was just going to call 311 and report it to
the police but didn't know if there was a better, more efficient route
to take.

Thank you!

Jennifer - You should call in a request to the Mayor's City-wide Call
Center 727-1000 however, this may be National Park Service Property in
which case the request should be called into them as well.

I am in desperate need of hangers for children's clothes today (Thurs)
or tomorrow (Fri). I am preparing for a big consignment sale and I
need a lot of hangers. Do you have any to spare? I can pick them up
from your porch.
Thanks!
