WHERE TO SEND AFRICAN SCAM E-MAILS
From: "Kathleen McLynn" <[email protected]>
Just received this scam Email. If anyone else gets one of these
West
African emails the place to report it is: by email:
[email protected] (assuming it isn't upper/lower case sensitive)
by
FAX: 202/406-5031 per instructions on the voice mail of Tom Freesmeier,
Secret Service at 406-5850. I hope no one is tricked by it, but it
seems
pretty blatant.
[ I didn't print the e-mail, but the gist of it is that an African
official/resident is coming to the US and needs a place to send his
funds. If you provide help, he'll split the money with you, etc., etc.
There's usually some military takeover mentioned and individual and
family are fleeing, etc, etc. They're asking you, the recipient of
the
e-mail, for an account number. Needless to say, if you were so foolish
as to provide them with your bank account number, they will clean out
your account. I receive these e-mails from time to time but figure
no
one would be naive enough to get involved. It would be a good idea
though to forward such an e-mail to the investigative address listed
above. I appreciate Kathleen McLynn's sending this information. --

REGARDING OLD COMPUTERS FOR LOCAL STUDENTS
From: "Laura Akgulian" <[email protected]>
[In response to a question from me as to whether they could use more
--
KS]:
As many as they've got, we can use. So yes, by all means, keep them
coming. We're waiting for one person to deliver her computer so we
can
attempt to fix the modem before presenting the system to Dwayne, the
student in need at Wilson. I'd like to thank the half a dozen
neighbors
who've responded thus far with computers or offers of $ for repairs.
We're finding other students who need them, at Alice Deal as
well.
Thank you for helping to make it all happen!
THE LISNER HOME CHRISTMAS BAKE AND BOOK SALE AND SILENT AUCTION

The Lisner-Louise-Dickson-Hurt Home, 5425 Western Avenue NW
Profits will be used to benefit the residents of the Home.
MANY THANKS TO COUNCILMEMBERS KATHY PATTERSON AND CAROL SCHWARTZ ON
THEIR RECENT PUBLIC HEARING ON THE PROBLEM WITH TOW COMPANIES IN DC.
The
tow company problem has been going on for more than a decade. It was
ignored until the insurance industry went to the Mayor for help. There
has been a joint committee operating for more than a year to fix it.
They are waiting for a computer tracking system to be completed. In
the
meantime, the hearing record is still open if you wish to submit any
comments to either Councilmember Patterson or Schwartz. A spotlight
like
this hearing is useful to keep this work moving along. There is a very
informative Inspector General's report with his recommendations
on the
IG's web page at www.dcig.org.
FAREWELL FROM RAJ AND NIKKI OF RAJ DESIGN STUDIO
From: [email protected]
We have a shop "RAJ DESIGN STUDIO" at 4904 Wisconsin Ave (at
the corner
of Ellicott & Wisconsin Ave). After 10 years, we are closing
our doors.
My husband & I have decided to slow down our hectic pace &
start
enjoying some of the lovely people and places in the Washington area.
We
just wanted to extend a thank you to all the neighbors and local
business for helping our 10 years to be a great experience. This
neighborhood is very special in its friendliness and comraderie, it
has
been a real pleasure to be here. We hope everyone will stop by
before
we leave at the end of January 2002 and say goodbye. We are having
a
big going out of business sale and maybe they will find that special
gift or something just right for themselves. Anyway, thanks for being
great neighbors and supporting us all these years.
Raj and Nikki
THANKS FOR THE SUPERCANS
From: [email protected]
I want to thank everyone who responded to my request for a Supercan

my composting operation. I ended up getting 4 cans.
I'm using 3 of
them to store leaves and other future composting materials and I gave
one to a neighbor who is has a similar composting operation.
Thanks
again. John

MECHANICAL STREET SWEEPERS HIBERNATE
From: [email protected]
District of Columbia Department of Public Works
For Immediate Release
Contact: Mary Myers, DPW
(202) 671-2375
The DC Department of Public Works announces that scheduled mechanical
street cleaning operations will be suspended this winter from January
4
until March 18, 2002. Street cleaning stops temporarily every
year
during January, February and the first part of March, traditionally
the
coldest months of the year. DPW officials explain that the
street-sweeping machinery spreads a thin layer of water under their
rotating brushes, creating potentially hazardous, icy, road conditions
during winter months.
Residents and visitors who park along designated alternate-side street
sweeping routes, will not be required to move their cars to the
alternate side of the street during the 10-week sweeper hiatus.
No
parking citations will be issued to vehicles parked during normal,
street-sweeping hours in areas posted with "No Parking/Street Cleaning"
signs. However, other parking infractions will be enforced as
usual.
The city will take advantage of any fair-weather days during the winter
to catch up on street cleaning. The sweepers will operate on
an
unscheduled basis without parking restrictions when weather conditions
permit between January 4th and March 18th. For more information
on
Street and Ally Cleaning or Parking Enforcement in the District, visit
the Department of Public Works website - www.dpw.dc.gov
SOUND OFF ON CITY SERVICES

Wouldn't it be better to repave Tenley Circle than bother with Albemarle
St.? I have never been able to figure out why my priorities are
always
different from the authorities'. But, Tenley Circle is in MUCH
worse
condition than Albemarle - and has much more traffic.

Parking Meter Peril
Dan (not a happy) Parker, [email protected]
A few years ago I groused about how so many parking meters had been
beheaded, putting into question the safety of parking in such locations,
no matter how central to town and well traveled. The city responded
(not
due to me) with a fancy contract and new meters all around -- superior
meters that take all sorts of silver change -- Happy days!
My work has me constantly on the road. I try to park legally. I carry
lots of change and I always pay my parking tickets. I rely on parking
meters. Of late, however, I've been annoyed at the number of broken
meters. I thought they were repaired under a contract with some big
Lockheed-like company. At least twice a week I lose my money in a meter.
I have the "broken meter" department on speed dial and have to listen
to
their long, long message before leaving my pertinent information.
Are
there any city officials who can do a little better out there? Oversight
should be easy and we deserve better.

We recently used Bob Lennox of Lennox Lock Service and were very
pleased. We first contacted him on the basis of an excellent rating
in
the _Washington Checkbook_ and found that it was well-deserved. His
number is 703-527-2932.

Good locksmith : Liberty lock and security.... I have called on Rick
several times over the many years, simply because his best friend is
my
best mechanic for 15 years... I figured good people stick together...
And so, I was right.. You probably will not see Rick him self, he is
the
big guy... But I am sure the employees are up to his standards of
honesty and customer service...

This is to inform you of the poor service I received recently from
District Safe and Lock. About a week ago I requested the company to
repair and replace several locks at our home I was told that they would
be able to come on Dec.6 at 10A.M. I advised them that I would not
go to
the office that morning but would await their arrival. When no one
arrived by 10:15 I called the company and was advised that they had
an
appointment ticket with no date on it, clearly an error on their part.
I
then requested the manager to send someone out that day since I was
at
home. They refused and said that Tuesday Dec.11 would be the earliest.
I
then refused to deal with them any further. I do not recommend this
company for lock work. Charles Ruttenberg

I had a terrific experience in a local business. This was the
second
time I had entered the shop of Bacchus Wine Cellar. Bassam the shops
owner was terrific. He told me that he just purchased the wine store
recently. I found the selection great and the prices were better
than
advertised in the Wine stores in VA. Keep the businesses busy
in our
neighborhood. Bacchus is at 1635 Wisconsin Ave.

AND FINALLY . . .
From: [email protected] (Ed McCauley)
From: "James H Leonard" <[email protected]>
A group of 8 guys at the pub led by O'Riley phoned Osama bin
Laden and
told him the 8 of them are at war with him. We're 8 Irish men
strong;
so look out.
Bin Laden told them that he was 500,000 men strong, along with many
weapons of war and were they sure they wanted to go through with
this.
O'Riley said that he would get back to him. Sure enough,
next day he
called Osama and told him the war was still on. We now have 20
men, a
hay wagon, some knives, and 2 rifles.
Bin Laden said he now had 2 million men and 10,000 tanks, many
laser-type weapons, helicopters, and fighter planes.
O'Riley said he would get back to him. Sure enough, next day
he called
Osama and told him the war was off.
Bin Laden asked him why they had changed their minds.
Oh, said O'Riley, we just don't see how we can possibly feed
2 million
prisoners.
