Species Database

This database gives an overview of most of the in Star Trek encountered species. It briefly explains biological, historical and cultural aspects of the various civilisations of the galaxy.  The database is still under construction, the descriptions to a lot of species are still missing. If you would like to help compiling a description of one or more species please contact Commodore Elron.

A

Acamarians

Humanoid civilisation from the planet Acamar III. The Acamarians have enjoyed peace for the past century, with the exception of Acamar’s nomadic ‘Gatherers’, who left their homeworld to become interstellar marauders. They have a distinguishing facial cleft in their foreheads and are also notable for individualised decorative facial tattooing. Acamarian blood is based on an unusual iron and copper composite, making it readily identifiable. Within Acamarian culture, membership in a clan is considered of great social and political importance. Conflicts between the various clans often became violent and in some cases could last for centuries. The ‘Gatherers’ split from the more conservative Acamarians over a century ago when they refused to accept a peace settlement that put an end to the brutal clan warfare, but eventually agreed to return home in 2366 as part of a new peace accord negotiated with help from the Federation.

Andorians

Civilsation from the planet of Andoria. They are described as a passionate and sometimes violent race. Before the 2200's, they were enemies with the Vulcans. They have blue skin and a pair of antennae atop their heads. And something extra....Marriage requires groups of four.

Andorians are blue-skinned humanoids, with hair ranging from pure white to blue-grey. They have a pair of knobbed antennae extending from the sides of the crown of the head. These ``antennae'' are actually extensions of their sinus cavities, giving the Andorians a great sensitivity to minute variations in pressure and temperature. They have an elevated aural sensitivity and an enormously enhanced sense of smell. The actual receptors are situated within the depressions at the tips of the "antennae" and are protected by the hard cartilagineous tissue that keeps the "antennae" rigid. Their visual acuity is also well above human standards. Andorians are somewhat thinner than most humans, but weigh equivalently, and are somewhat faster in movement and reaction time.

Androids:

An automaton made to resemble a humanoid.

Angosians

Humanoid species from the planet Angosia III. Non-violent by nature and essentially pacifist, the Angosians dedicated their society to the development of the mind and the cultivation of the intellect. However, their history is marked by several significant wars. In order to fight their Tarsian War in the mid-24th century, the government chemically and genetically altered their military, creating enhanced “supersoldiers” capable of survival at any cost. Unfortunately, these changes were found to be irreversible, and when the war ended these improved soldiers were deemed dangerous and isolated from the rest of their society. The Angosian government applied for Federation membership in 2366, but the application was suspended pending resolution of civil unrest resulting from the Angosians inability to repatriate the soldiers.

Antedeans

The Antedeans are an ichthyoid (fishlike) race, living in the wide oceans of their nearly landless planet. Their level of technology is surprising, given their limited resources and barely amphibious lifestyle. Although the Antedeans are capable of interstellar space travel, they find it extremely traumatic and survive the ordeal by entering a self-induced catatonic state. Upon revival at the end of their journey, Antedeans require large amounts of food to replenish their bodies. Many of their nutritional needs are unique to their ocean ecology. They obviously, therefore, prefer to remain on their homeworld.

Anticans

The Anticans are a somewhat advanced lupine race, whose past includes a great deal of incidental contact with a race known as the Selay. The Anticans are extremely set in their ways, and often regard the customs and practices of other races to be barbaric and foolish.

Large, canine, humanoids. A carnivorous species that prefers to consume live or raw meat. They had a longstanding dispute with the Selay, another sentient race that lived in their system.

They applied for Federation membership in the year 2364 and negotiated a peace with the Selay. The Anticans became members of the Federation in 2371.

B

Bajorans

Ancient humanoid civilisation from the planet Bajor. Located near the Cardassian border, Bajor was highly valued by the Cardassians for its natural resources. Bajoran culture flourished half a million years ago, but declined dramatically during decades of Cardassian occupation in the 24th century, during which most Bajorans were driven from their homeworld. Bajor was claimed as Cardassian territory from about 2328 and was formally annexed in 2339. Bajorans of all backgrounds joined together to form a resistance, and in 2369 were successful in driving off the Cardassian occupation. Soon after, the Bajoran provisional government requested and received Federation assistance. The Bajorans are a deeply religious people. The Bajoran provisional government is led by the Chamber of Ministers, but also highly influential in governmental affairs is the religious Vedek Assembly, which is led by the Kai. During the brutal Cardassian oppression, their spiritual beliefs became a powerful force in their society, providing them with the strength and resilience to survive. The Bajoran religion worships beings known as the ‘Prophets’, who are said to dwell in the ‘Celestial Temple’ in the nearby wormhole. Under Bajoran custom, a person’s family name precedes their given name.

A deeply spiritual people who were living in prosperity while humans were beginning to stand on two feet. Enemies with the Cardassians
following the Bajoran occupation. An earing symbolizes religious devotion to their gods, the Prophets. A ridge covers the nose.

Bandi

Humanoid civilisation native to the planet Deneb IV. The Bandi are a technologically unsophisticated race, but appeared to have an unusual genius in architectural methods when, in 2364, they offered Starfleet the use of a newly constructed starbase called Farpoint Station, as part of a bid to become members of the Federation. It was later discovered that the Bandi had not constructed the station, but that it was a shape-shifting spaceborne life form that had been captured and coerced into assuming that form. Starfleet soon uncovered the coercion and freed the life form. They are one of the few known races in the galaxy who are not inspired by their knowledge of the stars to seek space travel and are apparently quite happy on the planet where they evolved.

Benzites

Inhabitants from the planet Benzar. They are from the same geostructure and they therefore look alike. Benzites do not breathe well in class M enviroments but thanks to technological advancements, they are able to work like any other human. They look a little like catfish.

Betazoids

A telepathic race from the planet Betazed. They can reads most minds with the exception of the Breen, Ferengi and dopterians. They look identical to humans, although there eyes appear darker.

Betazoids are a race of telepathic humanoids native to the planet Betazed. Betazoids generally do not start developing their telepathic skills until puberty, when the rush of newly activated hormones serves to activate their previously latent telepathic talents. A very few Betazoids are born with the telepathic abilities, but they have to go through a very intensive psychological experience due to their inability to filter out the 'noise' created by 'normal' thought.  Because of their training in the schools of Betazed, Betazoids are rarely xenophobic, and can communicate with most any other race at their level.  With the exception of their telepathic abilities, the Betazoids are essentially similar to humans in all other respects.

Bolians

Humanoids from the planet Bolarus IX. They have a light blue skin tone and have a ridge running down their face and through their bodies. Their tongues also have a ridge. They have blue blood. Not a violent race.

Borg

Breen

Bynars

The Bynars have developed a nearly symbiotic relationship with their computers. This relationship is obvious in their facility with computer technology, but also in their rapid means of communication, their linear, boolen thinking and even their names, which are often composed of zeros and ones.

C

Caldonians

The Caldonians are an exceptionally tall humanoid race, known chiefly for their love of pure research. While they welcome contact with alien species as a chance to expand their knowledge base, they are wary of entering any agreements, which might interfere with their research.

Cardassians

A humanoid race from the planet Cardassia prime. They have a large neck with thick ridges running down the sides. They also have a dent in their forehead that looks like a spoon shape. They dislike cold temperatures. Cardassians had a history of prosperity until war broke out and they lost all natural resources. This forced them to find a planet that would meet their material needs: Bajor. They enslaved the Bajorans and even now, after so many years, they are still corrupt.

Chalnoth

The Chalnoth are a fiercely competetive race: every part of their life is marked with combat in some form. Their government is essentially anarchistic; powerful Chalnoth may rise to power over a significant area but their power is dependent on their strength. Powerful Chalnoth are usually assassinated by desperate enemies or ambitious underlings.

Deltans

The Deltans themselves are closely related to the human norm. The primary differences are neurochemical, including a complex pheromone system which effects other humanoids. In appearance, they have only a small range of pigmentation, which tends to have a pale blue tinge. They have very little hair, with little to no facial or body hair, and baldness being quite common (although not universal). By Terran standards, Deltans tend to an overwhelming beauty. The Deltan pheromone system causes many problems in contact with other humanoids, because they uncontrollably release a erotic attraction pheromone. Chemical applications can reduce that effect, which is virtually neccessary for interactions in enclosed spaces. At great intensities, such as during intercourse, exposure can be damaging or even fatal to other humanoids.

Devidians

Dopterians

E

Edo

The Edo society is truly utopian, there is no crime, no poverty, and no war. Their lives are spent in recreation and pleasure, and they enjoy sharing their joys with other races. However, their idyllic existence is not without price; the absense of crime is due to a draconian judical system in which all crimes are capital.

El-Aurians

Elaysians

F

Ferengi

From the planet Ferenginar. They're culture and government is based on Capitalism. Slightly like 19th and 20th century. Women are not seen as equals. They are not allowed to wear clothing or speak to strangers.  Not unlike some of the present Arab nations today. Ferengi have a four lobed brain which cannot be telepathically read by Betazoids. They have an upper and lower lung and large sensitive ears. They are also short in stature. Most Ferengi stand over 5 feet.

Founders

G

Gorn

Civilization of reptilian humanoids. Gorn forces distroyed the Earth outpost on Cestus III, claiming it was an intrusion into their space. The captain of the Gorn vessel and Captin Kirk were transported to a planet by a race known as the Metrons, where each fought for the survival of his respective crew. Kirk won, but refused to kill the Gorn, after realizing that the Gorn attack had been the result of a misunderstanding. The territorial dispute over Cestus III was later resolved, and Federation colonists settled on the planet.

H

Humans

Hupyrians

I

Iconians

J

Jarada

Reclusive insectoid race from Torona IV. Known for extreme adherence to protocol, the mispronounciation of a single word in a diplomatic greeting lead to a 20 year rift in communications. Jarada are known for being quite vengeful if wronged and actually ate the crew of the ship that mispronounced it's greeting in 2344. They are highly advanced in subspace mechanics and theoretical mathematics and with the recent treaties signed have provided several facinating scientific exchanges.

Jem’Hadar

Genetically created reptilian humanoids from the Gamma Quadrant. They are infamous for the cruelty, brutality, and machine-like efficency. Their reputation is best summed in a Gamma quadrant quote ". . .and then they call in the Gem'Hadar, then you die." With endurance, strength, and a limited natural cloaking ability, they are an extreme threat in hand-to-hand combat. Created to be physically superior to almost all humanoids, they have but a single flaw. They were genetically addicted to "Ketricel White" a narcotic-protein drug to ensure their loyalty. They are almost always accompanied by Vorta who act as overseers.

J'naii

Androgynous race from system of same name in Federation space. Not members of the Federation and have no interest in becoming members, as the Federaition principles of tolerance and understanding run contrary to the J'naii laws requiring rigid enforcement of a code that requires all J'naii from exhibiting any sign of gender specific behavior. Violators are subjected to a brainwashing therapy without appeal. J'naii have widely colonized their own star system but their low warp spacecraft make interstellar travel unfavorable for them.

K

Kaelon

A humanoid race from Kaelon II. Their star is an ancient one and slowly dying. Without some artificial enhancement, the star Kaelon willvgo nova in around 200 years. They are distinguished by their crimson forehead stripes. Kaelon technology is somewhat primitive with only limited interstellar ability. Kaelon fusion technology is without equal, however, since they have spent over 200 years researching a way to rejuvinate their sun. Kaelon society is marked by the ceremony of the Resolution, where all who reach the age of 60 commit ritual suicide so that they do not become a burden to others. Their are no exceptions under any circumstance and Kaelon has lost many of it's best minds to this ritual. This leaves the irony that the most sacred ritual in their society may eventually be the death of it.

Kazon

Kerelian

A race of humanoids with extremely advanced vocal and audiotory abilites. Kerelians are almost identical to Terrans except with significantly enlarged ears. Most Kerelians find employment as musicians, singers, or in the sonic sciences. This ability is the evolutionary result of a very thin atmosphere with pressures so low that many Kerelians need special treatments before entering a standard class M enviroment.

Klingons

A warrior civilzation. They originate from the planet Qonos (pronounced Kronos). They are a proud people who value honor..above all else. Klingon culture is rich with folklore and tales of heroic battles. The death of a Klingon warrior is a joyous time for other fellow Klingons. The Klingon body has redundancies known as "Braklul" Almost every organ in a Klingon body has a back up redundancy.

Strong humanoids from Qo'nos. Dark skinned with a limited exoskeleton, most notable on the forehead. Klingon physiology incorporates multiple redundancies for virtually all vital organs. Their blood is a light purple fluid using several lanthanide metals as it's base. Klingons can mate with most humanoids similar to Terrans with significant medical help. The Klingons have a close biochemical similarity to the Romulans and Vulcans. Klingon culture is highly militaristic culture based around principles of honor. Klingon sciences are highly advanced in weapons and spaceflight but are very primitive in terms of medical or social sciences. Monetary Standards Officialy Honored in the Klingon Empire: · Latinum · Darseks

Kobliad

Humanoid race almost identical to terrans. A genetic deficency in the Kobliad protein Deuridium causes short lifespans on the the order of 25-30 years. The Kobliad are known to have a major crime problem related to theft or fraud of Deuridium. With proper dosage a Kobliad can live to be well over 100. They have applied for Federation Medical assistance but are currently bogged down in Prime Directive restrictions since they are not a Federation member and have no major treaties. Hence, they have recently applied for membership.

Kotacian

An offshoot of the Lenarian race. Almost certainly an ancient lost colony but different enough to be distinct from their more known brethern. Small in number, most Kotacians serve in mining, cargo transport or passenger service. They appear quite similar to humanoids except with violet or blue hair

Ktarian

Semi-feline humanoid race. Mostly humanoid except with enlarged frontal skull bones and latent feline features. Renowned for advancements in neurology, this led to their recent censure and embargo by the Federaiton. A Ktarian game distributed on Risa in 2368 had the neurological effect of rendering the player a tool of the Ktarian government. With this they planned a takeover of the Federation and other galactic powers. While Ktarian biotechnology is prized on the black market, the exotic technologies are banned as a sanction for their plot.

L

Legarans

A reclusive race of gastropods. They generally require a viscous organic fluid enviroment for movement and nouishment. Because of this, they rarely travel off planet. They are highly advanced in the arts and science, particularly genetic engineering. They finally signed a treaty with the Federation in 2368 after nearly a century of negotiations. Lenarian: Humanoids found throughout the Federation. They are often found as miners, or other menial professions. Their homeworld has been lost to antiquity, as they have had spaceflight for millenia. In their exodus from a pollutted homeworld they lost the records of the pre-exodus times including the coordinates of their homeworld. All that survived were isolated stories and legends. Their technological progress has been very slow since acheiving warp flight however, and they hold a resentment against the Federation because of it's rapid progress and meticulous record keeping.

Leyron

Humanoids from Malkus IX. They have barely acheived warp flight and are just beginning to explore the Galaxy. They are of note to
linguists that one of their major subcultures developed a written language significantly before spoken or sign languages.

Ligonian

Dark skinned humanoids from Ligon II. They lack advanced technology but posess significant agricultural abilites. They hold ritual honor highly and have a strong and stable social structure. In Ligonian culture the females posess the land and property but allow the males to rule in their name. Thus giving women a certain degree of equality in an otherwise patriarchal society. They have several treaties with the Federation for supplies of rare vaccines and antibiotics.

Lissepian

A famous humanoid race of traders from Cardassian space. Charactaristically burly and yellow/green skinned, Lissepians also have a large aft lobe of the brain with an aft ridge vaguely reminicent of Dopterians. Lissepians have modern interstellar spaceflight technology and operate many independent trading and shipping ships. Lissepians trade in anything legal (usually) of any value, including holographic equipment, building equipment, and foodstuffs.

Lurian

A race of large semi-humanoids from deep space. Burly and large with no necks, a large chin, and a slightly apelike appearance. Few Lurians have been found in Federation space but those who are known exist mainly as gamblers or barkeeps. Unfortunately we have seen no examples of Lurian ships or technology, but is estimated to be somewhat behind the Federation. Lurians have strong voices but generally do not speak for reasons unknown.

M

Malcorians

The Malcorians are an exceptionally xenophobic race, whose government takes great pains to conceal any contact with alien spiecies. Despite their prewarp technology, they show great promise in propulsion theory. The combination of warp technology and xenophobia may eventually prove to be a dangerous one.

Mintakans

Mizarians

The Mizarians are a pacifistic society. Their world has been invaded and conquered many times, but they have surived by offering no resistance whatsoever. Despite this pacifistic ideology, they are quite confrontional and defensive in speech; they are apparently convinced that their ideology is superiop to any other.

N

Nausicaans

The Nausicaans are a warrior race, whose pride and bluster are legendary thoughout the galaxy. Their society is authoritarian, ruled by the strong and cunning. They have a great respect for other cultures that demonstrate similar values, but also demonstrate complete disdain for those who show signs of cowardice.

O

Ocampa

Organians

Orions

Orions are held in contempt by many in the Federation as pirates, cheats, and worse. In as unbiased a view as possible, the Orions are an extremely practical people. They are factionalized into a great many political groups, the Ral-Utak (which is alternatingly translated as `clan' or `cartel'). However, while they are rivals, they freely trade and support each other, since they generally gain by doing so.

P

Q

Q Continuum

R

Romulans

Romulans are usually both larger and stronger than Terrans. The average height for a 30-year old male Romulan is 6'1", while the average height for a 30-year old female Romulan is usually 5'9". Romulans, as a people, are extremely intelligent. This is highly due to an advanced cerebral cortex. Romulans also tend to be on the aggressive side. They are, in fact, the exact opposite of their cousins, the Vulcans. Vulcans are very logical, and reject aggression. Also, Vulcans are usually very small in stature. The most noticible features of the Romulan are slightly green skin, pointy ears, and two bones located on the forehead.

S

Selay

Sheliak

The Sheliak are a vaguely humaniod, classification R-3 lifeform. Their technology is quite advanced, particulary in tereforming and other biological fields. Their diplomatic methods are often frustrating, as they are fond of short conversations and incredibly complicated treaties.

T

Takarans

The Takarans are a truly unique species. Unlike other sentient races, they do not have differentiated internal organs. This decentralized internal structure makes them incredibly resilient, as they can only be seriously injured at the cellular level. They are also noted for thier advances and ideas in physical sciences.

Talarians

A humanoid species characterised by a distinctive hairless enlargement of the coronal area of the skull. Talarian society is militaristic and patriarchal. They have a long tradition of warfare and these are echoed in their modern customs and ideas, which are typically rigid and inflexible. They do not have the history of conquest that marks many other military societies, but their territory is well defended. They place a high value on their homeworld and would rather die than see it invaded. Young warriors are trained on small vessels known as observation craft. Some Talarians have been known to have bad reactions to raktajino, causing them to become unruly.

Tamarians

A humanoid civilisation first encountered by the Federation in 2268. The Tamarians are faintly reptilian in appearance, but their most distinguishing characteristic is their language. Although easily translated, it is not easily understood because it is composed entirely of metaphors drawn from their culture’s vast mythology. In order to understand one must first grasp the metaphors. Early encounters between the Tamarians and the Federation were uneventful due to an inability to communicate.

Tholians

Civilisation known for its punctuality and highly territorial nature. A long conflict raged between the Tholians and the Federation, well into the 24th century. The governing body of the Tholian people is the Tholian Assembly. They are infamous for using their Tholian web – an energy field used to entrap disabled enemy spacecraft and eventually destroy them. Diplomatic relations had eventually been established with the Federation by 2367.

Tribbles

Soft, furry, warm-blooded animal. Tribbles were once sold as pets because of their cute, appealing qualities. They are hermaphroditic and capable of reproducing at phenomenal rates, but will stop breeding if food is withdrawn. The Klingon Empire considered them to be an ecological menace and proceeded to wipe them out. In the latter part of the 23rd century, hundreds of Klingon warriors were sent out to track them down and exterminate them. An armada obliterated the tribble homeworld and by the end of the 23rd century, tribbles were believed to have been eradicated. This extinction was reversed, however, when some live specimens were transported through time onboard a Federation starship. Tribbles are disturbed by Klingons and react emotionally around them.

Trill

The Trill are actually two species, both sentient, who share a symbiotic relationship. The memories and character of the long-lived vermiform symbiont are merged with the body, personality and skills of the humanoid host. Upon the death of the host body, a Trill symbiont is usually transplanted into another host. This way, the symbiont builds up a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience, which is shared with the host. Competition between hosts is high and only one in ten candidates are selected. Joining is the aspiration of most young Trill. Once joined, the host and symbiont become biologically interdependent, and after 93 hours, neither can survive without the other. The resulting joined life form is considered to be another person, but retains memories from previous joinings. Trills are not expected to honour commitments from previous hosts, and Trill society is strongly against reassociation of subsequent hosts, in cases where previous hosts were married. Trills have naturally cold hands and are highly allergic to insect bites, as the toxins released interfere with the biochemical connections between host and symbiont. Trills are more sensitive to extreme heat than most species.

Ullians

Humanoid telepathic race, noted for their talent in exploring repressed or fragmented memories. Ullians are characterised by skin involutions in the temporal area of their skulls. Though they can read the minds of many species, they themselves are unreadable by certain other telepathic groups, including Betazoids. Before 2068, Ullian society was plagued by people who used their ability as a form of psychic assault, but by the 21st century the Ullians had evolved into a peaceful people. This ability is now chiefly used by Psychic Historians, in their quest to amass a library of memories from the various alien species that they have been in contact with. These individuals receive special training in the art of telepathic memory retrieval.

V

Vidiians

Humanoid species native to the Delta Quadrant. Once a society of educators, artists and explorers, a terrible disease, known as the phage, struck the Vidiians 2000 years ago. This disease destroys the body’s organs, and the Vidiians could survive only through the widespread use of organ transplantation to replace diseased body parts. Although Vidiians relied heavily on transplants from dead bodies, their needs became so great that they began capturing individuals of other species to serve as involuntary organ donors. The Vidiian Sodality developed sophisticated medical technology to make extensive interspecies transplants possible, but was never able to develop a cure for the phage. Because of the debilitating nature of the disease, they often used healthy captives as manual labour before killing them for organ harvesting.

Vorta

Humanoid civilisation, part of the Dominion in the Gamma Quadrant. The Vorta are servants of the Dominion’s Founders and control the dreaded Jem’Hadar warriors on their behalf. The Vorta were once small, timid ape-like forest dwellers, until they were genetically engineered by the Founders to assist them in ruling the Dominion. This engineering included a compulsion to worship the Founders as gods and created abject loyalty. The Vorta now reproduce by cloning and have only the skills that the Founders deem necessary for them. They were therefore not given an aesthetic sense and are tone-deaf. They have poor eyesight, but very good hearing, and a limited sense of taste. The only foods they really enjoy are Kava nuts and rippleberries. Vorta are immune to most types of poison.

Vulcans

Humanoid species native to planet Vulcan - a hot, arid planet with a gravitational field strength greater than that of Earth. The Vulcans were once a passionate, violent people whose society was afflicted by terrible wars. This changed some 2000 years ago, when the philosopher Surak led his people to adopt a philosophy of pure logic and suppressed emotions. Vulcan society is now based entirely on logic and any evidence of emotion is considered socially unacceptable. Vulcans possess a telepathic ability, which, although quite limited, is used in the Vulcan mind-meld. In the distant past, Vulcans would kill to win their mates. At present, they still revert to ancient mating rituals, when the Vulcan male is driven to mate every seven years, at a time called Pon farr. During Pon farr an adult Vulcan will lose all emotional control and become quite dangerous. Because of Vulcan’s high gravity and thin atmosphere, they exhibit greater physical strength and sharper senses than those of humans.

X

Xepolites

Y

Yridians

Humanoid civilisation, well known throughout the galaxy as traders of information. Through means unknown they invariably have critical knowledge about the politics of the galaxy at their disposal. They will work for anyone who is willing to pay for their services, regardless of the consequences to others, and have little loyalty. With their unrivalled talent for information gathering, and their independent status, they are often a cause of concern for those who wish to keep their actions hidden. This earns them the enmity of those on whom they inform, but their customers are usually more than satisfied with their work.

Z

Zakdorn

The Zakdorn are a humanoid society, with a long-standing reputation as masters of strategic planning. Their reputation for tactical genius is well earned and has not needed testing in recent memory. Members of the Zakdorn have, among other things, served as Tactical Consultants during Starfleet training.
