General Simming
Guides
Basic Information and Rules
General Play
- The role-plays are made by posting to message boards or e-mail lists. You will be told which when you first join a ship.
- The sim is played by posting what happens to your character.
- Posts should start with a stardate in the format of SD yy.mmdd in which mm is the current month and dd the day. The year changes every 31, December. 2001 = 87, 2002 = 88 and 2003 = 89.
- Posts can be written in a play format giving stage directions, or in a story book format in either first or third
person. Try to use the format that the other crewmembers on your ship are
using.
- Try to post once a week or more if possible.
Basic Rules
- Never kill or injure another character without permission from that person.
- Never take anyone off to do an away mission without their permission
- While it is aloud to mention other characters in your posts and for those characters to say and do things, try not to make them do things that are not in that person's normal nature.
- Never create super-powerful technology that could change the balance of the entire quadrant. It makes the story un-realistic. If this does happen, you ship might be attacked by continuity creatures of the nth dimension, who steal this technology and forbid it from ever being used again
- You are not a superhero. Being able to fight off 10 Borg with nothing but a toothpick might sound impressive to you but it ruins the story. Most people are average. Doing something impressive in rare occasions is permitted, but not all the time and it must be believable.
- Don't solve all of a ship's problems in one go.
- If you are about to do something that you think might be against the rules, ask your captain first.
- Do not alter the story line dramatically unless you have permission from the Captain.
- You cannot bring another character to your position if they are supposed to be doing something else. If they are in the middle of an away mission, or they are working on something in the science labs, then they are not going to be able to play tennis with you in the holodeck.
- Your posts will be better if you interact with other people. For instance, you can be in sickbay for whatever reason in which case you can speak for the doctor, or when there is a battle, the bridge crew can be used.
- Try to stick to your own responsibilities. The counsellor will not be in engineering fixing the warp core
- Try not to do stupid things. The Chief Engineer will not go to the mess hall if the warp core is about to explode, he will stay in engineering and fix the problem. Similarly, the captain will not visit the doctor to have a small chat with her during the middle of an emergency when he is required on the bridge (I know that Picard did it in Encounter at Farpoint but that was a Pilot)
- If you are new to a ship, read the last few posts so you can pick up the plot lines.
- Try to keep your character in character at all times.
- If your character is not involved with the main story arc, then you do not need to sit out and just watch. Make small posts to show that you are still paying attention. You can always make yourself involved through your posts or you can post about something completely different. For example, if there is no need for your character, you can always post about your character doing something in his free time on the holodeck, or create a minor character to do something trivia with.
- You can invent crew if you need to. If the doctor is on an away mission and you need treatment, there will be another doctor in sickbay who is able to help you. Most ships have more than 9 people on and these extras can also be simmed to a minor extent
- A good post should be at least two paragraphs long, but substance is more important than length.
- It is expected that everyone will post at least once or twice every few weeks when they are not involved in the main arc, more frequently if they are involved. IF you will be unable to contribute for a short period then please let your captain know in advance.
- Please watch your language usage. Please remember that many of the boards are open to the public and people of all ages visit our site.
