General Simming Guides

Simming FAQ

This page is intended to provide all information needed to participate in the Section47 RPG. If you think about joining, please read the entire text, even if you are familiar with RPGs. The information is presented in the form of Frequently Asked Questions. This should make it easier to read.
The text is compiled from several documents that are used for the Holoworld RPG.

Q: What is an RPG?
A: An RPG (or roleplay game) is an interactive game in which a story is being written by several people. Together with the other players you form the crew of a starship. At the start, you are provided with mission orders and you write towards the goal of the mission. Almost nothing is pre-set and everything can happen. Because you write the story, you can make it go any way you want. You can do everything with the character you play.

Q: What is the object of the game?
A: The main object is, of course, to have fun. But there has to be a storyline to follow with the posts, and this storyline is given by the mission orders. You could say that the goal is to successfully accomplish the mission.

Q: What is the relation between the trivia game and the RPG?
A: Absolutley nothing. What goes on in the trivia games is completely unrelated to the RPG. It is possible to participate in only one of them, or you can use different names for both games.

Q: How much time does it take to participate?
A: That depends on how much time you want to put into it. If you write one post per week, it will take you about 45 minutes per week.

Q: How often do I have to write a post?
A: A minimum of one per week is appreciated, and nearly demanded. If you write too little, the story slows down too much and it's no fun anymore. So try to write at least one post a week to keep the story moving.

Q: How long should a post be?
A: Depending on how much your character is doing in the post, it can be only a few lines to several hundred words. If you make it too short there's very little that's happening. If you make it too long, you risk the chance of getting bored.

Q: How do we post?
A: Every RPG unit has either a mailing list, with an address like [email protected] or a message board.

Q: I've got a question that isn't listed here. Who should I contact?
A: Send a message to the Chief of Communications.

Q: How do I join?
A: Read the page about joining and follow the steps there.
