Positions Guide

Security Officer

This guide will help you better sim the position of Chief Security and Tactical Officer aboard a Federation starship. This guide also applies of course for Chief of Security and Chief Tactical officer on ships where these positions have been seperated.

The Chief of Security is responsible for security on the ship. As such you will have a department full of security officers at your disposal. You will provide security on the ship for your crew but also for dignitaries or aliens visiting the ship. When there is an away mission you will also often be required to provide security there, especially when going to unknown or hostile terrain or into a combat situation.

The Chief of Security will often be the one who stresses the need for readyness in staff meetings, being on the cautious side when it comes to welcoming people on the ship or be somewhat overzealous when there is a possible combat situation.

As head of the department you will be involved in every major deciscion on the ship and your have the ability to create many crewmembers as NPC's (Non Player characters) which you can use whichever way you like.

The Tactical Officer will be in charge of the tactical side of missions. You will control the weapons and shields from the tactical station on the bridge and you will have the responsibility to fire weapons on the CO's or FO's command. You will report to the captain as to any damage done to an enemy ship or asteroid or whatever you are firing at. Incomming hails are also routed through your station.

On many ships these two positions are combined into one but there are ships in our fleet that have split the two into seperate positions. When this is the case be careful not to step too much and too often into the terrain of the opposite officer, in other words when you are Chief of Security on a ship with another Tactical Officer, be careful not to sim too much if any, about the Tactical Officer's job or vice versa.

One last note, even a CTSO is a person with free time. If the mission is going slow or your character is not immediately needed this does not mean you don't have to sim. Sim about what your character does in his off-duty time, socialize with other crew, real or NPC's, train with your subordinates or something like that. There is much fun to be had as CTSO even on a very peaceful and uneventful mission!
