Basic duties The Navigation Officer is the officer responsible for both helm and navigator functions, including projecting the desired course or trajectory of the ship, determining the ship's actual position, velocity and direction and, of course, piloting the ship. Other officers may serve as conn, but the Chief Navigation Officer will be the senior of these officers and, since the best pilot, will most often be called on to control the ship in an emergency. |
